Settlers in the 1800s rolled into Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley on the tracks of a railroad engineered by Robert Heysham Sayre. When he himself settled down, it was in an opulent Gothic Revival mansion that today houses a grand and spacious hotel. Each room is individually furnished, some with a half-canopy bed, some with antique Federal-style furniture, some with carved-beam ceilings and some with fireplaces.

On the main floor, public rooms are sumptuous, including a parlor with chandeliers and fresh flowers, set around a white marble fireplace. The main house, along with a carriage house and stables, sits on two acres of manicured gardens in the wealthy Fountain Hill Historic District, built up centuries ago by other well-to-do merchants.

The Lehigh River courses through town about two blocks north and is a popular route for whitewater rafting in the summer. Just over the river is the landmark Colonial Industrial Quarter, which preserves 1700s stone factories built by Moravian colonists, including America’s first municipal water pump system.

Less than two miles away, the hulking smokestacks of now-defunct Bethlehem Steel pierce the sky like church spires. The company used to be America’s second-largest steel manufacturer, and the ruins have been contextually rehabilitated into a casino and an atmospheric live-music venue.

Very close to historical Bethlehem which we didn't have time to explore but hope to return to do that. Close to the Lehigh Valley winieries trail which was what we did.
