Why We Love This Hotel

  • It's a "well presented" (The AA) hotel in Windsor, with a spa and a luxury leisure club
  • The restaurant holds an AA Rosette and looks out on to the River Thames
  • Windsor Castle and its ancient parkland are around five minutes' walk away, and Ascot Racecourse is a 15-minute drive

The Sir Christopher Wren Hotel & Spa is a minute's stroll from the River Thames, just beyond the ramparts of Windsor Castle. It's a Grade II-listed property that's named after the architect behind St Paul's Cathedral and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, who himself grew up in Windsor.

You can head to Windsor High Street, a couple of minutes' walk across Eton Bridge, to watch the Changing of the Guards ceremony on certain days. Windsor Castle, which "encapsulates 900 years of British history" (The Daily Telegraph) and is home to some of the most prestigious works of art in the Royal Collection, is open for daily tours and is just over five minutes' walk.

The restaurant serves modern European cuisine, and Sunday lunch comes with a Bubbles & Jazz option, with three courses, free-flowing prosecco and music from a local jazz trio. The terraced bar serves a variety of cocktails, wines and Windsor and Eton beers, as well as a menu of bourbons and cognacs. Wren's Club is just across the courtyard from the main house and boasts a well-equipped gym and spa.

Bedrooms are spread across the main house and an external building across the lane. Early check-in and late checkout must be requested at least 48 hours in advance, and parking is limited (it's an extra charge of £25 per car, per night, to park on site). Wi-Fi is free.

The rooms had thin walls, could hear all types of noise. Didn't get the treatment I had booked and confirmed on the phone. Spa area had no luggage storage so had to carry case up several stairs. Not a relaxing experience at all.

The reason for staying in Windsor was to attend the Dubai Classic Ascot Event which started at 11:30 am. We arrived hoping for an early check in but would have been happy waiting a little until 12:30, but we were told under no uncertain terms it was not possible. This resulted in us missing half the races, I again asked reception at 12:30 to be told sorry no. I explained our situation with Ascot but was not able to get away from the hotel and over to Ascot until 2pm missing 3 of the 6 races at the meeting. The hotel was also made aware this was a weekend away to celebrate our anniversary, but when we went down for dinner early evening we were refused entry to the restaurant. We were informed it was booking only and were asked to vacate the dinning room. We had to take dinner in the hotel bar next door eating of the bar menu and amongst many drinkers not the ideal anniversary meal we had been looking forward to. On returning to our room we were woken during the early hours by extremely loud live music. On investigation we discovered our room was at the rear of the hotel opposite a late night venue with live bands playing and large groups of people shouting aloud until 01:30am. we had requested a nice quite room with my wife recovering from major cancer surgery. This was to be a weekend for her to relax and enjoy herself in the event it turned out to be a horrendous experience all round and a complete waste of money. I did complain to the hotel who admitted they knew about the late night venue and the noise issues but still chose to place us there. All they were prepared to offer for ruining our anniversary weekend and Ascot day out was to take of 50% of our bar bill which on reflection was not acceptable

Breakfast could be so much better than it was. Only one cup on our table for two so had to ask for another. There was a 'brunch' menu but we were never offered anything other than the buffet yet I saw someone with freshly cooked poached eggs. I asked a member of staff if we could order poached eggs and items from the brunch menu and she told me I could but made no attempt to get a menu for me and walked away when I asked if could I get one. Poor fruit selection and, for the first time, no yogurt on offer at all.
