Why We Love This Hotel

  • This 16th-century hideaway is in the historic town of Winchcombe, five minutes' drive from Sudeley Castle
  • The bar serves regional ales and draught ciders, and the hotel has its own wine shop
  • Stow-on-the-Wold village and Cheltenham High Street are 20 minutes' drive away

Overview

The White Hart Inn is a characterful former coaching inn dating from 1554. With just eight bedrooms, this restaurant with rooms makes a cosy base for a countryside break, or you could travel there on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, which calls at Winchcombe station.

Winchcombe is a sleepy town with quaint cottages, boutiques and a 15th-century church, and it was once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. It's a good base from which to explore quintessential Cotswold villages such as Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh -- all are within 30 minutes' drive of the hotel.

The inn is also at the intersection of the Cotswold Way and Gloucestershire Way walking routes.

Sudeley Castle, the former home of Henry VIII's sixth wife, Catherine Parr, is less than five minutes' drive away, and is open 8-30 December for a Spectacle of Light exhibition. Cheltenham Racecourse is a 15-minute drive away.

The hotel's dining room serves rustic and hearty British cuisine. Ingredients are sourced locally, and the bar stocks regional guest ales and Hereford cider. There's also a wine shop on site.

Bedrooms have country-style décor -- many contain antique furniture, and all include free Wi-Fi. Lazy mornings are encouraged, with breakfast served until noon. Well-behaved dogs can stay at no extra charge.

The evening meals were excellent.
Other Comments
Bedroom carpet had bad stains, tea/coffee tray was not clean and the furniture was very shabby. Bathroom door hook was missing. Breakfast was poor, indeed the man next to us was served still frozen fish! Breakfast waitress didn't have a clue how to do her job properly. All this was disappointing because we enjoyed the dinners very much and the ambience of the bar and dining room is very good.

In the room we stayed black mould on window sills. Not enough parking places

Rooms in need of modernisation. Handle broken on door, carpets stained and dust and cob webs on skirting boards and ceilings. Cream scone was microwaved and soggy. Would of been nice if warmed up in oven or given the option to have cold. The evening meal was lovely and breakfast very hearty. We're enjoyed our stay but just needs to address these issues.

Great position for exploring the area, staff friendly and a good selection of ale in the bar.

Only downside was that some items on the menu were not available and very limited parking on site

Being greeted from the moment we opened the door, till the farewell when we left.
Other Comments
No single staff member can be singled out for enough praise for a job well done, The food was excellent, both in variety and quantity, the full English is just what as it as described on the menu. However as a coffee lover the coffee deserves a special mention, worth a visit just to savour really good cup of coffee.
