Located beneath Shepherd's Crag in the Borrowdale Valley, The Borrowdale Hotel was one of the first coaching inns in the area and has been welcoming guests since 1866. The hotel has views of Derwentwater -- "a silvery curve crisscrossed by puttering cruise boats" (Lonely Planet) -- and is a great base from which to explore the surrounding fells and trails.

It's a 12-minute stroll down to the lake, or you can join the Allerdale Ramble -- a 54-mile path on the southwestern side of the water -- which takes 20 minutes to reach on foot. This hike takes in the fells Castle Crag and Cat Bells. Head to Walla Crag, six minutes' drive from the hotel, to see "a fascinating mosaic of rocky headlands, islands, sparkling bays, woodlands, undulating green fields [and] farms and settlements" (The Daily Telegraph).

Keswick, a 12-minute drive from the hotel, has a picturesque market square and lots of dining options. Keswick Launch Company operates daily boat trips on Derwentwater from March to November (weekends only during February) from Keswick Landing Pier, which is 10 minutes by car from the hotel. The Lakes Distillery, which is open daily for tours and is overlooked by Skiddaw, is a 25-minute drive away, while The Wordsworth House (a National Trust property) is 30 minutes away in Cockermouth.

The Borrowdale Hotel has original features, such as oak panelling, a real coal fire and the characterful room bells that hang in reception. There is a restaurant serving fresh fare, and a wine cellar that stocks wine from around the world. There is also a conservatory offering afternoon tea. The 40 individually styled bedrooms all have a flat-screen TV, tea- and coffee-making facilities, bathrobes and free Wi-Fi. Dogs can stay for an extra £10 per dog, per night, and are welcome in the bar and lounges.

Other Comments: In dinner I had a Wood Pidgeon starter. The meat contained a piece of lead shot, When I brought this to the staff's attention my concerns where dismissed with a comments "that's how they kill the pidgeon" and "don't you normally eat game". I was disappointed with this response.

Enjoyed Most: Poached eggs at breakfast were prepared and very much enjoyed.
Other Comments: We had looked forward to being inspired by the choices made by a master Sommelier for the Wine Flight which accompanied the main evening meal. To say the choices were poor would be an overstatement. My wife and I were treated to glasses of wine which had been open in the bar beofre dinner. There was clearly no thought whatever to the food selection and its comparitor to reflect the flavours and tastes assosciated with the wine. Only slightly better was the final selection with the dessert but again totally uninspired. I think it is very fair to say that the Wine Flight was not that at all. I would have expected tasting notes and why the Sommelier felt he had made the choice he did to accompany the meal selection. The food was ok however the beef and venison stroganoff was a major dissapointlent with stringy meat which was quite tasteless. The stroganoff sauce reminded me of a watered down version of a Diane sauce. - Literally weak and insipient.
