Hidden in the Cornish countryside, Boscundle Manor is an intimate boutique hotel surrounded by five acres of gardens. The 18th-century property makes an excellent base for visiting the Eden Project, 10 minutes’ drive down the lane, and the shops and restaurants in nearby St Austell town.

The South West Coast Path is a mile away (you can borrow wellies from the hotel) and in an hour you can walk to the historic harbour at Charlestown. Thirty minutes more will bring you to the pretty cove at Porthpean -- ideal for a sea swim.

Guests are welcomed to the hotel with a complimentary pot of tea and a slice of cake in the elegant lounge, which is heated by a log fire throughout the winter. The property may look quaint and cottagey, inside is an indoor pool and small spa, plus a year round hot tub and seasonal outdoor pool. In the afternoons, take a stroll around the terraced gardens and woodland or learn to play croquet on the lawn.

The 2-AA Rosette fine-dining restaurant serves locally sourced produce and homemade dishes, all prepared by head chef Jenny Reed. We recommend sampling the West Country cheese slate with quince jelly, and there’s also a 6-course tasting menu for the foodie diner.Private dinners can be arranged in the thatched gazebo, overlooking the terraced gardens.

The bedrooms are all named after female authors and literary heroines, and have the same charm and period features as the rest of the property. Most rooms have a bath tub as well as a shower, plus free Wi-Fi (although the signal is weak in some rooms) and tea- and coffee-making facilities -- you’ll find milk in the fridge. Four rooms have sofa beds to accommodate families and mermaid- or pirate-themed ‘snuggle sacs’ are available for kids. Dogs are also welcome in ground-floor rooms (extra charge).

Enjoyed Most: The staff were very friendly. Good breakfast.
Other Comments: The evening meal and the bathroom. 2 sliver of pigeon breast on top of some salad was a very disappointing starter (£6). Menu said pigeon breast - the least expected would be half a breast, maybe? The cheese souffle was overdone, chessy enough but well brown on top and bottom. The mains were OK. Waited for the dessert, in the end it was delivered to the bedroom when it was ready. Although free WIFI was offered, I could not get access throughout the stay, in the bedroom, or the dinning room.
