This Georgian property sits in 312 acres of landscaped gardens roamed by fallow deer and bounded on one side by the River Uck. Boasting four AA Red Stars for its high standards of hospitality, Buxted Park Hotel has hosted William Wordsworth, Winston Churchill and Marlon Brando.

There are several public areas where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. The Coat of Arms Lounge and Crystal Bar have high ceilings, chandeliers and views across the parkland. They serve coffees and cocktails, elevenses and afternoon tea. There is also a 2-AA-Rosette fine-dining restaurant. We like the sound of the Buxted Park venison, the locally sourced Sussex lamb and the chef's 7-course taster menu. There are whisky- and wine-tasting evenings, and guests can sign up for cookery courses. The hotel has 44 carefully furnished bedrooms, many with garden views. Wi-Fi is free.

National Trust property Wakehurst Place -- which is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew -- is a 30-minute drive away. It has pretty ornamental gardens and an Elizabethan mansion that is open throughout the winter. Bolney Vineyards and Hever Castle -- a 13th-century settlement, once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn -- are both within a 35-minute drive of the hotel. Bodiam Castle and Eastbourne are 45 minutes' drive away. The hilltop town of Rye, which is "often described as England's quaintest town… a little nugget of the past" (Lonely Planet), takes an hour by car.

Enjoyed Most: We enjoyed the location of this beautiful building in the parkland and the space there is in the local surrounding. The view from our window was unimpeded and a joy to wake up to.
Other Comments: There seems to be a real challenge with some aspects e.g. we had to wait for a long while to be taken to the dining room. Some of the young waiters seemed a bit tense. Breakfast on Wednesday morning was not good enough compared with Thursday morning, especially the presentation. I do understand that there were 2 different venues for breakfast and that may have contributed to this situation. The continental meat board was very poor indeed. There were no bowls to put the very sparce fruit salad in and there was definitely a shortage of staff. Incidentally, both myself and another client complained about the over saltiness of our fish dish. There was also no Croft Original Cherry at the bar. Neither the Tio Pepe or Harveys was suitable for my taste buds. So I had water instead. There was no robe in our bedroom. Apart from these minor but important niggles, we enjoyed our stay. Most unpalatable of all was the visual appearance of the French Headwaiter's ONE CENTRAL TOOTH only.

Enjoyed Most: The attentive staff and delightful property. If something was wrong it was fixed immediately.
Other Comments: The dining room manager was an absolute delight, nothing was too much. He is an asset to the organisation. I was a bit surprised at the additional cost of room service, whilst the charges were clearly listed, the cost for a small portion of chips was £7.25

MARGARET Mar 26, 2016 Ryde Isle of Wight, United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: The staff were lovely, the whole hotel is very tired, especially the rooms, not including the bathroom which was tip top. The room was very very noisey as the corridor floors were wooden and every time people walk past the whole room vibrates, also from the corridor above the room. The afternoon tea was fabulous and so was the breakfast.
