Ranked in the top 20 of Portland's 130+ hotels on TripAdvisor, the Mark Spencer Hotel is a family and locally run boutique hotel offering guests an intimate and friendly stay in the city. The top-notch service earns rave reviews on TripAdvisor, as does the prime location in the up-and-coming West End just along the border of the Pearl District.

It's a great spot for those who want to get a local’s perspective of the city, within walking distance of neighborhood favorites like the world-famous Powell’s Books, the Crystal Ballroom, Voodoo Doughnut and the top-rated Portland City Grill -- Portland's highest restaurant with the best view in downtown. The Portland Streetcar stops two blocks away, as does the MAX light rail which conveniently connects to downtown and the airport.

As the oldest operating boutique hotel in the city, the Mark Spencer has been a favorite among artists for over a century with a guest registry that includes the likes of Louis Armstrong, Spike Jones and Sammy Davis Jr. This commitment to the arts continues today -- each guest room and hotel floor displays work by local artists, reflecting the city’s rich culture and thriving art scene. All rooms are cozy and inviting, and after a multi-million dollar renovation, blend modern décor with vintage charm in details like exposed brick and wooden beams. Bathrooms are finished with marble floors, Italian-tiled showers and fog free mirrors and some upgraded rooms come with full kitchens.

A thoughtful list of complimentary extras includes Wi-Fi, an expanded continental breakfast, fresh baked afternoon cookies, an evening wine tasting hour and a 24-hour self-serve espresso machine. Pets are welcome for an additional fee and an on-site laundry facility is available for those on longer stays.

Enjoyed Most: The afternoon cookies were really good.
Other Comments: I understand they recently re-did the hotel, however it still felt pretty run-down. Every door in our hall had significant scratches and dings. The lobby looked dated. We had a weird interior room, and it always felt humid in there - probably because there was no vent fan in the bathroom. Also, there was no mention of the TravelZoo amenities (or availability/unavailability) at check-in. I'll take responsibility in not asking for them once we checked in and didn't receive them, but I find it uncomfortable to prompt staff to advise on the status of bonus amenities.

Enjoyed Most: Great Staff! Breakfast in the morning, Tea in the afternoon and Wine and cheese in the early evening are part of your stay. Very easy to get around downtown Portland. Lots to see and do.
Other Comments: When I checked in, the front desk tried to charge me $20 more than the TravelZoo agreement. I showed them my confirmation email and they quickly changed it to the agreed amount. This is a pricey hotel, but since I did not need to rent a car, I thought it was worth it.

Enjoyed Most: The location was perfect-it's seem to be at the center of everything. The group of people I dealt with at the front desk were fantastic. There was one or two people later they were not as helpful but anytime I encountered these three people they were amazing. I've traveled all over the place and I've seen that a good service and I have to commend these fine employees.
Other Comments: Many of the reviews mentioned that the hotel has kitchenettes in every room. That's not the case. Each room has a small refrigerator but only specific rooms have The stoves and suxh. Each room is different in the first room I was assigned was dark and there was a very funky smell. I suspect the large garbage container for the building was just outside the window. What's a let them know there was no way I could stay in that room they move me to a much brighter and pleasant room. They also provided me with fairly early check-in and a 1:30 check out. I know they can't always do this but the fact that they did because they could was very much appreciated and helped me out quite a bit.

Other Comments: Cute place, enjoyed our stay

Enjoyed Most: Location and staff.
Other Comments: We booked a suite, but gave us two adjacent rooms. The extra bathroom made up for the lack of a sitting area. Staff was very nice.
