Fifty, NYC – an Affinia Hotel

Why We Love It

  • A $19 million renovation in 2014 brought in sleek furnishings reminiscent of a stylish urban apartment
  • Rooms are spacious and great for families -- even the standard room offers 50%-100% more space than Manhattan's average
  • All guests can attend a free wine happy hour and select from a pillow menu -- the latter may come in handy as some rooms get road noise
  • St. Patrick's Cathedral and Fifth Avenue's flashiest flagship stores are about four blocks west

This hotel's rooms are the kind that make you want to hire a decorator. Largely done up in soothing monochromatics, they have the elegant injections of colors -- bold printed throw pillows and Morris Louis-like abstract wall art -- that you'll try and try again to mimic in your own place. This hotel's confident style came about thanks to a $19 million renovation completed in 2014.

Rooms are about 50% larger than the average Manhattan space, and have a mini-fridge and a pillow menu. Studios and suite upgrades have full kitchens and sleeper sofas. A club room on the second floor has a cozy fireplace and free Wi-Fi, and each afternoon from 5-6 p.m., the management pours complimentary glasses of wine while mingling with guests.

The surrounding streets can be busy and noisy -- sound-sensitive sleepers should ask for the back of the building. Head about four blocks west to reach Fifth Avenue, which in this area of town stocks some flagship department stores and clothing retailers. The Art Deco towers of Rockefeller Center rise along the avenue's west side, and right across the street on the east side soar the gothic spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the second floor lounge area – such a comfortable place to relax and make plans before a night out in the city!

Only negative is that "free wifi" is only in the lobby area of the hotel. You have to pay 14.95 to have in your room

I've stayed at Affinia several times. I feel because we got a good deal, they stuck us in a crappy room. Loud as hell. Won't come back.
