A Gothic-style property with two acres of gardens and an AA-Rosette restaurant, the BEST WESTERN Abbots Barton Hotel sits just 15 minutes' walk outside the centre of Canterbury.

The city is probably best known for its historic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for its connection with Chaucer's Tales (the hotel offers discounts for the Canterbury Tales exhibition). But if you're tired of walking along its pretty riverbank, go further afield -- the seaside towns of Whitstable, Herne Bay and Ramsgate are all around half an hour away, and spectacular Leeds Castle is just 40 minutes' drive away.

The AA-Rosette Fountain Restaurant serves British fare for dinner. Look for dishes such as roasted breast of Gressingham duck, Sussex beef rib-eye steak and assiette of artichoke. In the morning, there's a vast breakfast buffet with hot and continental options. The Westfield Bar is a pleasant spot to enjoy a pre- or post-dinner drink overlooking the gardens, and serves bar snacks all day. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar and some bedrooms.

The Gothic-style building is simply furnished, but the bedrooms are a good size with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and tea and coffee-making facilities. Some have views of the cathedral in the distance.

Please note, there is currently an extension being built at the hotel to include a swimming pool and spa. Disruption to guests is kept to a minimum but parking on site at busy times may be limited.

The food was outstanding. The hoel is conveniently situation within a 10 minute walk to the centre of town. There is plently of parking. Our only complaints would be that we found the mattress uncomfortable and the room was very hot despite the radiator being turned off. If we returned, we would opt for an upgrade to the room.

We had an evening meal included in our package. this was two items from the special menu, my wife had slow cooked chicken which was very dry, I had venison which was quite tough. We may have picked a bad evening but we think the chef needs to pay a little more attention to the quality of the evening meal. We were aware that other guests were complaining about the quality of the food. All in all we enjoyed our stay though.

Really enjoyed our stay, all your staff are brilliant and the hotel is in a brilliant location, we do think that you should tell guests about your building renovations when they call, we don't mind being woken at eight by diggers etc but some people might
