A Gothic-style property with two acres of gardens and an AA-Rosette restaurant, the BEST WESTERN Abbots Barton Hotel sits just 15 minutes' walk outside the centre of Canterbury.
The city is probably best known for its historic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for its connection with Chaucer's Tales (the hotel offers discounts for the Canterbury Tales exhibition). But if you're tired of walking along its pretty riverbank, go further afield -- the seaside towns of Whitstable, Herne Bay and Ramsgate are all around half an hour away, and spectacular Leeds Castle is just 40 minutes' drive away.
The AA-Rosette Fountain Restaurant serves British fare for dinner. Look for dishes such as roasted breast of Gressingham duck, Sussex beef rib-eye steak and assiette of artichoke. In the morning, there's a vast breakfast buffet with hot and continental options. The Westfield Bar is a pleasant spot to enjoy a pre- or post-dinner drink overlooking the gardens, and serves bar snacks all day. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar and some bedrooms.
The Gothic-style building is simply furnished, but the bedrooms are a good size with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and tea and coffee-making facilities. Some have views of the cathedral in the distance.
Please note, there is currently an extension being built at the hotel to include a swimming pool and spa. Disruption to guests is kept to a minimum but parking on site at busy times may be limited.
