Driving up the long private road towards the grand Eynsham Hall, you would be forgiven for briefly imagining you were the Lord and Countess of Grantham, returning home. In fact, Bampton of "Downton Abbey" fame is a mere 20 minutes from here and Eynsham Hall dates back to the same early 20th-century era.

The grand manor house is surrounded by acres of well-manicured gardens and vast rolling swathes of parkland beyond. It's understandably popular for weddings and it's a good location for those looking to visit the wider Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace or Oxford. There are some great pubs in the area to explore, and the hotel's newly refurbished Gun Room Bar is a cosy place to curl up with something warming.

The restaurant serves an extensive buffet breakfast in the morning with cooked and continental options, and there's a full menu available at lunch or dinner. The bar also has more informal options, such as sandwiches, on offer, and there's an impressive afternoon tea menu (which must be pre-booked). There's also an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and a fitness club, and beauty treatments are available on request.

The bedrooms have free Wi-Fi and views over the gardens. Main Hall rooms are in the manor, while Standard and Cosy rooms are in the adjacent Lodge building. Some are on the smaller side but all are tastefully decorated and have tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Enjoyed Most: Location
Other Comments: Rather chaotic breakfast buffet. Missing eggs, mushrooms, bread, and cereals. Very weird decor, mixture of modern and antique jumbled together. And the neon sign above the old fireplace in the lounge was incongruous

Enjoyed Most: The setting was excellent
Other Comments: I expected breakfast to be served to match the cost of the rooms and breakfast. Pre-cooked fried eggs were a let down. Overall the food served was not value for money, for example £7.50 for a small slice of children's pizza. This was very disappointing especially as the food content of the pizza was sparse.

Enjoyed Most: The staff. The surroundings in the main hall, dining areas and louge were very impressive. A good breakfast and dinner.
Other Comments: We paid extra for a room in the main hall. My wife is handicapped and cannot walk beyond a few steps. She also needs a wheelchair. No bedrooms are on the ground floor. There is no lift. The staircase to the first floor has 34 steps. We could not accept the very nice first floor room allocated and agreed to a room in adjoining buildings with disabled fittings but 150 yards from the hall and dining rooms. Unfortunately it was snowing when we left the room for breakfast in the morning. It could have been worse! The staff were as helpful as they could be and we receive a reduced rate compared to the room originally booked.
