The Grade II-listed BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel is set in a 73-acre deer park, and a herd of deer often grazes in the paddock in front of the building. There's also a lake and manicured gardens. The building sits on the site of the former home of local legend Robert Shafto, an 18th-century MP about whom the folk song "Bobby Shafto's Gone to Sea" is said to have been written.

The hotel is a great base from which to explore the local area. Auckland Castle, also known as Auckland Palace, is a 10-minute drive away, and dates back to the 12th-century. Durham Cathedral and Castle are less than a 20-minute drive away and Bowes museum, with a nationally renowned art collection, is less than 40 minutes away. The heart of the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with heather moors, meadows and woods is less than an hour away.

The Library Restaurant is set in the oldest part of the house and serves classic British dishes. There's also a Lounge Bar. For keen anglers, fishing is available onsite and the 18-hole Brancepeth Golf Club is two miles away.

Other Comments
The room was cold and it took 2 days to get it warm. The food was poor and despite informing the hotel a week in advance the chef could not adequately meet me needs. Served uncooked smoked haddock on our first day. Bill was wrong they tried to charge us for meals that were part of the pakage

Room was excellent and the location and surroundings perfect. Breakfasts were also very good.

Dinner on the first night was good but we would have preferred to have eaten off the a la carte menu and have the £32 per person taken off the bill rather than be restricted to the 'travel zoo' menu.

The meal on the Saturday evening was very pleasant with a very good selection on the Travelzoo menu. The hotel was good and the staff very accommodating and really friendly. The only criticism was the room we stayed in(room 18) the bathroom floor was very uneven and had cracked tiles, This however did not have a negative effect on our stay at the hotel.
