This family-run Beech Hill Country House Hotel was built in 1729 and is set in woodland filled with ponds and waterfalls. The Georgian hotel has been frequented by A-list celebrities and politicians including Bill Clinton and Jude Law. The property also won Hotel of the Year 2015 in the Irish Hotel and Restaurant Awards.

Used as a base for the US Marines in World War II, there is a memorial to the Marine Corps, the hotel has a World War II archive within the hotel building.

The hotel is a great base from which to explore the local area. It is close to the River Foyle where you can walk alongside the river, wildlife is bountiful and there's a variety of birds that flock there. The River Foyle is 20 minutes' drive away and is an excellent wildlife-spotting destination -- you might see dolphins and seals, or huge flocks of migrating birds, and it also has excellent fishing and some of the best oyster beds in the UK and the Netherlands.

The Sperrin Mountains, Northern Ireland's largest and least-explored mountain range, are a 35-mintute drive away. Walkers can expect undulating hills, quiet valleys, boggy uplands and a land teeming with wildlife. The Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just over an hour's drive away.

The Ardmore Restaurant was named Best Hotel Restaurant in Londonderry at the Irish Restaurant Association Awards 2014. The hotel sources local products from nearby farms and from local fishermen. Vegetables and herbs are grown in the hotel’s own garden and gathered daily. We like the sound of the smoked mackerel fish cakes with horseradish aioli and beetroot, the slow braised lamb shoulder with celeriac purée and savoy cabbage, and the vanilla crème brûlée with shortbread biscuit.

Heritage Double rooms have antique furnishings, and some have views of the garden. Superior Double rooms are located in the original house and in the modern wing and have garden views.

Golfing, horse riding, hill walking and other activities can be arranged by the hotel.
