Whilst often thought to be Sicily's little sister, Sardinia is in fact an island with "some of the Mediterranean’s most seductive beaches" where you can explore without "the noise and stress" of larger resorts (The Daily Telegraph). Near the island’s east coast is the San Teodoro Hotel, in a great spot around a 5-minute drive from the town centre and the white-sand La Cinta beach.
The location is a little remote -- a hire car is recommended -- but the hotel runs a regular shuttle service into town for those who don't want to drive. San Teodoro itself is pleasant to potter around; there are a number of artisan markets and plenty of spots to linger over a coffee and people watch. Worth a visit further afield is the ancient Tharros open-air museum on the opposite side of the island, a scenic 2-hour drive away. An hour north of San Teodoro is the upmarket Costa Smeralda where the Italian glitterati relax on yachts and yet more stunning beaches.
Back at the hotel, there's a large swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds and umbrellas. If it gets too hot, the pool bar serves drinks and ice-cream all day. There's also a tennis court and a complimentary kid's club runs in July and August. In the morning, a simple buffet-style breakfast is served in the basement restaurant. Expect eggs, ham, cheese, bread, croissants and cereals. Later on, you can dine in the hotel restaurant or explore the multitude of options in nearby San Teodoro or Porto Rotondo town, around 40 minutes by car.
The property was renovated in 2011, and the bedrooms are simple but spacious. Some have a balcony and overlook the pool and rugged mountains beyond. Wi-Fi is available free of charge, and there are computers for guests’ use in the lounge. There is no lift at the hotel so guests with mobility requirements should ask for a room on the ground floor.
