Why We Love It

  • The historic AAA 4-Diamond hotel is directly on Michigan Avenue across from Grant Park
  • The on-site health club is massive with an indoor pool, running track and Crossfit classes
  • Great base for exploring Museum Campus -- the Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum of Natural History are all a 15-minute walk (or five-minute cab ride) away

History buffs might choose the Hilton Chicago based on its past alone. Originally built in 1927, the hotel retains all the Beaux-Arts glamour of the era with added modern touches. This is one of the only hotels in the country to have hosted every U.S. president since it opened.

Upon walking into the hotel’s lobby and grand ballroom, it’s easy to see why so many luminaries have been here. The gilded space glimmers from top to bottom with ornate archways, fluted columns and tear-drop crystal chandeliers.

This is a popular spot for conventions, but it is also a smart choice for families due to its proximity to kid-friendly activities like the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum of Natural History, all a 15-minute walk (or five-minute cab ride) away. Also nice for those with kids are the roomy double bed guest rooms (some have two bathrooms) and the one-bedroom suites. A grab-and-go deli on the main floor is handy for quick dinners and snacks.

When booking a room, make sure to request a remodeled one. Since 2012, the hotel has undergone an enormous renovation and past guests say that the not-yet refurbished rooms are sorely in need of a refresh.

There is reasonably priced parking ($30 per night) next door.

Enjoyed Most: The lobby and restaurants/bars were very nice.
Other Comments: My bathroom was not clean when I arrived; there was used soap in the shower and hair in the shower and on the sink. It appeared the toilet or shower was leaking as well as there was water on the floor frequently throughout my stay.

Enjoyed Most: The doormen and valet were incredibly kind and nice.
Other Comments: Their internet didn't work for an entire day I was there (the att techs tried to fix it but couldn't), their in room doing order system didn't work - the screen was broken and a fix or replacement was never attempted even though I was supposedly in a "new room", I requested a menu to order food and it took over an hour for them to deliver it, the room was very small, the staff of the kitty o Shea's restaurant weren't actually rude but they weren't personable either, room service was incredibly overpriced (four dollars for a CAN of soda is highway robbery and absolutely ridiculous), I was overall very unimpressed, and won't be staying again, or at a Hilton hotel ever.
