Why We Love This Hotel

  • Dating back to 1854, this Lake District retreat hold three AA Red Stars, which indicate "excellent levels of quality" and "outstanding levels of hospitality and service"
  • Cedar Manor Hotel & Restaurant provides "five-star levels of service and comforts, and a classy, contemporary edge" according to The Daily Telegraph
  • Lake Windermere and the town centre are both less than 10 minutes' walk away
  • The AA awards the property a Rosette for its "impressive seasonal cooking"

The Cedar Manor Hotel & Restaurant, which has a picturesque location 10 minutes' walk from Lake Windermere, holds three AA Red Stars -- indicating that the property has Inspector's Choice status and offers "excellent levels of quality" and "outstanding levels of hospitality and service". The hotel is the highest ranked in Windermere on TripAdvisor, and is described by The Daily Telegraph as having a "classy, contemporary edge".

This is an excellent spot for walking -- Lake Windermere is less than a quarter of a mile away via a nearby bridle path and the town centre is less than 10 minutes' walk away. Ambleside is a 10-minute drive in the other direction; a bus stops right outside the hotel gates. The property has storage for bikes if you are bringing your own.

Built in 1854 from local slate, Cedar Manor has 10 good-size rooms, which are named after nearby lakes and fells, including Coniston, Windermere and Langdale. The décor is pretty, with furniture made by local craftspeople, and rooms include a fridge with fresh milk for tea and coffee.

In the mornings, a cooked breakfast is whipped up by owner Jonathan to order. The restaurant serves modern British fare. It is also open to non-residents so pre-booking is recommended, and (unusually for a small hotel) room service is available. The restaurant closes for the winter period at the end of October. The bar remains open all year round, and is a pleasant spot for an afternoon or pre-dinner drink, with a good selection of local ales, whiskies and gins available.

Absolutely everything was to a really high standard so little more to be said really. This is a small boutique hotel and I think it particularly suits couples. The owners go out of there way to make their guests feel welcome and there are lots of little touches that make it feel extra special. Excellent restaurant too for that special occasion dinner.

Beautiful boutique hotel in a fantastic location. Beautiful walks from the hotel away from the roads into Windermere Village and Bowness. The room was spotless and comfortable with luxurious toiletries and a gift of chocolates and processco. The filter system removing the need for plastic bottles of water really impressed us and they should get extra points for investing in ways to make the hospitality business environmentally friendly.

The only small improvement would be to not wrap the plastic tumblers in the bathroom in plastic baths. It is such a shame to promote green hospitality to then slip up on unnecessary plastic wrapping. Other than that perfect!

They had thought about everything in the room (eg. safe, ironing board, brush etc.). The evening meal was excellent and the hosts and staff very attentive.

The hotel is special. It's oozes class but has an incredibly homely feel about it at the same time. Service all round was excellent. The man that checked us in was superb giving us lots of tips about the surrounding area and where we could walk to. The lounge bar is lovely to sit back, boots off and chill with a night cap after a long day out. We just wished we'd brought our slippers! The breakfast was delicious with not just your average fry up on offer but smoked salmon, eggs benedict and more. Unfortunately we didn't get to try the evening dinner as the restaurant is also highly recommended by the locals and is very popular (the hotel owner did offer to try and squeeze us in but we didn't want to deprive others) so next time I would reserve for the restaurant at the same time as reserving the hotel. The location of the hotel was also great, just a 10 minute walk into Windermere where there are some lovely bars and restaurants, and a further 30 minute walk down to Bowness where you can catch the cruises around the lake. All in all we had a beautiful weekend and will definitely book again.
