Overview

This cosy bolthole on the North York Moors is an AA 4-silver-star property offering stunning views, seasonal menus and local ales on tap. Furthermore, The AA Hotel Guide 2017 describes The Inn at Hawnby as a place to "enjoy a cosy stay and great food".

Lonely Planet describes the North York Moors as "classic walking country" and says that the area is "criss-crossed with footpaths old and new, and dotted with pretty, flower-bedecked villages". Hiking routes pass close to the inn, while the medieval ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle and the Baroque mansion of Duncombe Park are less than 15 minutes' drive away.

The historic city of York and the pretty seaside town of Whitby are both around an hour away by car. Keldy Castle is a 40-minute drive and Thirsk Racecourse is less than half an hour away.

The property is home to the AA-Rosette-awarded Mexborough Room, where you can sample the seasonal menu in the restaurant or on the terrace, while soaking up views over the gardens and surrounding countryside. Produce is sourced locally where possible and although the menu changes regularly, we love the sound of the blue cheese to start and the beer-battered haddock main.

The cosy bar has a selection of fine wines, but the real highlight is the variety of local ales, including Black Sheep, Arden Ale and the inn's own Hawnby Hops.

Once you've had your fill, there are nine bedrooms to choose from -- six in the main inn and three in the converted stable annex across the road. All rooms are furnished in a cosy country style. During term time it's best to arrive before 2pm, when reception closes for a few hours while the owners pick up their kids from school.

There appeared to have been a breakdown in communication with Travelzoo as they had no record of our reservation - fortunately they had a room available for the 2 nights of our stay

Quiet location - Amy young staff member very helpful.
Other Comments
Poor service by management - i.e. nobody on arrival to greet with prosecco as described just a note from management, forced to pay again upon leaving despite buying voucher from travelzoo Well cooked but sparse breakfasts i.e. small cooked breakfast 1 sausage, 1 egg, 1 tomato, 2 small bacon rashers no mushrooms or beans, no phone signal, no atmosphere in hotel, tv not working properly.

I'm sure the rooms in the hotel were nice having seen photos, but we weren't given one. Some of the food was good, if your could find clean crockery.
Other Comments
I shall be submitting a formal complaint, but basically we booked a break in a 4 star hotel but were accommodated in a 1 star converted stable, that was small, unclean, badly designed and maintained, did not have access to facilities like the advertised WIFI etc. The hotel was unmanned for several hours when we arrived and basics left undone.

The quite village, and lovely scenery.
Other Comments
The hotel was very tired looking, it need to be tided up, the rooms had things that were broken, like the light shades, television was loose on the wall, and the hot water didn't work on the last day.
