Overview

The AA Hotel Guide 2015 praises The Inn at Hawnby's "charming" atmosphere, "attentive and friendly" service and "delicious, home-cooked meals". This cosy bolthole on the North York Moors is an award-winning inn offering stunning views, seasonal menus and local ales by a cosy fire.

The location of the hotel is a walkers’ dream -- the Lonely Planet describes the North York Moors as having “some of the most spectacular views you'll see in the north of England”. In addition to rambling routes accessible from the doorstep, the hotel is less than 15 minutes' drive from the medieval ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle and the Baroque mansion of Duncombe Park.

For a day trip, the historic city of York and the pretty seaside town of Whitby are both around an hour by car. Keldy Castle is a 40-minute drive and Thirsk Racecourse is less than half an hour away.

The property is home to the AA-Rosette-awarded Mexborough Room, where you can sample the seasonal menu in the restaurant or on the terrace, while soaking up views over the gardens and surrounding countryside. Produce is sourced locally where possible, from Murton Bank pigeon and Yorkshire haslet to English cheeses accompanied by a tankard of port. The bar also serves up traditional pub fare, with a fish and chip night each Friday.

The cosy bar has a selection of fine wines, but the real highlight is the variety of local ales, including Black Sheep, Arden Ale and their own Hawnby Hops.

Once you’ve had your fill, there are nine bedrooms to choose from – six in the main inn and three in the converted stable annex across the road. All rooms are furnished in a cosy country style, with ensuite bathrooms, TVs and complimentary Hawnby spring water. During term time it's best to arrive before 2pm, when reception closes for a few hours while the owners pick up their kids from school.

From the press:

“This charming 19th-century inn is located in a peaceful village” -- The AA Hotel Guide 2015

"Has the sweeping majesty of the North York Moors all around it, an inspiringly remote setting for walkers and gastronomes” -- The AA Restaurant Guide 2015

I would have paid slightly more for the deal if a dinner was included at the inn, worth considering for future deals.

Set in beautiful countryside, nice and quiet location. Lots of moorland walks nearby, an ideal place from which to explore this part of Yorkshire.

An excellent place to get away from it all as mobile phone reception very poor. Bar not open every afternoon, we stayed Sunday and Monday nights and bar not open Monday so ask before booking if you need to know.
