Overview

We can't remember the last time a Chicago hotel opened to this much fanfare. Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, GQ and Vanity Fair all wrote glowingly about this old-meets-new Michigan Avenue property, but we think Chicago Magazine said it best: "This hotel is going to blow your mind."

Originally a gentlemen-only private club for Chicago's elite, this palatial property opened to the public for the first time in 125 years in May 2015. The property restored many of the 19th-century details like marble floors, rich wood-paneled walls, 12 working fireplaces, stained-glass windows and cast-iron staircases.

Guest rooms offer a nod to the building's history as an athletic club, with details like pommel horse-style seating at the end of your bed. Modern touches like power centers with USB hookups and complimentary Wi-Fi bring your stay into the 21st century. Bathrooms feature white-tiled walls, Carrara marble sinks and C.O. Bigelow Apothecary bath products.

The restaurants and bars on the second floor include The Game Room bar with an indoor bocce court and a shuffleboard table and the Cherry Circle Room, dine on a menu inspired by original 1890s-era options like chateaubriand of beef, caviar or a bone-in ribeye steak. Guests should absolutely make a stop at Cindy's on the 13th floor -- it became an instant hot spot as soon as it opened for its amazing views overlooking Millennium Park. For more casual dining, there's a Shake Shack on the ground floor, and the Chicago Athletic Association is the world's only hotel where you can order Shake Shack room service.

  • "The hottest hotel in town" -- Vanity Fair
  • "Undeniably cool" Fodor's
  • "One of the most architecturally and historically significant buildings in Chicago" -- Chicago Magazine
  • "America's best new hotel" -- Men's Journal

The room was very small. The temperature in the room was 76 so it was too hot to sleep.

With very little impact on our trip, a bulb needed to be replaced on a reading light and the main light fixture needed replacement or repair. Room 1015.

disappointed that two of the three bars were closed for maintenance on one day of our two day stay. could not get the room to cool down below 72 degrees no matter what the thermostat was set for.
