Run by the same family for over 50 years, the Arundell Arms is "one of England's major hotels for country sports and fly fishing", according to The Good Food Guide. This charming 300-year-old inn also excels in other areas: the rooms are "ungimmicky, pretty and comfortable", according to The Daily Telegraph, and the restaurant holds two AA Rosettes.

Set in the quiet village of Lifton, the hotel is 30-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park and two miles from the Cornish border. Plymouth, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan can all be reached in under an hour by car.

The hotel is renowned for its salmon, trout and grayling fishing on the River Tamar -- the hotel owns 20 miles of fishing rights. We have negotiated a half-day fly fishing experience for £49. Information about tackle hire (including waders) is available at the hotel's tackle shop. For rainy days, there's a skittles alley, table football and table tennis on site.

Guests can feast on hearty pub grub in the hotel's Courthouse Bar (closed Monday evenings). There's also a cosy hotel bar selling well-kept cask ales, including local favourite Jail Ale from Dartmoor Brewery. The hotel's fine-dining restaurant was once the village's assembly hall. Now glamorously lit by a crystal chandelier, it has held two AA Rosettes since 1987 and showcases local produce like Devonshire beef and Aylesbury duck. You can get a 4-course tasting-menu dinner for two at the restaurant, with a sorbet course for £49.

The rooms feature antique furniture and beds are on the soft side, but the hotel can provide firmer mattresses on request. Those staying in rooms at the front might hear the church bells on Sunday mornings. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

The evening taster menu and the associated wine flight ( which we purchased additional to the voucher for the meal)

We also took advantage of your overnight stay voucher which included breakfast. The hotel is an old style country house hotel and was pretty much as expected. The ground floor of the hotel is comfortable and delivers a warm welcome to guests both in lounge and bar areas. We shared an afternoon tea ( additional) which was small but nice. The room was standard double I believe from our booking but we were disappointed in the room. It was very dated, small and looked out onto the main Rd through the village with direct views into the properties over the Rd! Bathroom was beyond needing a facelift and the water was Luke warm at both ends of the stay. We don't go away to watch TV but we did rather think that the circa '70's portable was a little last century!! Bed was comfy enough and it was all clean etc just very old and a bit tired. I wouldn't have been happy to pay the regular rate.....the star at this hotel is the chef !! I would recommend eating here but wouldn't stay again.
