Hôtel Château Cléry is an historic French manor house dating back to 1766. The property is 35 minutes' drive from Calais, so it's easy to reach via the Eurotunnel or ferry.

The hotel is a 15-minute drive from Boulogne-sur-Mer -- France's largest fishing port -- which is described as "the most interesting of France's Channel ports" by Lonely Planet. The Ville Haute ("high town") area of Boulogne is surrounded by a 13th-century wall and is notable for its 12th-century belfry and pretty cobbled streets. We you stop at Nausicaä, described as "one of Europe's premier aquariums" by Lonely Planet.

The Côte d'Opale runs 40 kilometres from Boulogne to Calais, its "dramatic coastline", "wonderful restaurants" and "intriguing coves and sandy beaches" are recommended by The Daily Telegraph. Lonely Planet also praises the "charming seaside towns" along the coast.

Le Berthier -- the hotel's restaurant -- serves regional dishes made with local produce and has views of the hotel's 12 acres of parkland. There's an à la carte menu available and an impressive wine list.

The property also has a bar, a sun terrace and a sauna. Luxury Rooms all have double beds and free Wi-Fi.

This is a pet-friendly hotel. It's 20€ (£15) per night, per animal.

Enjoyed Most: Grand surroundings, quiet, lovely grounds.
Other Comments: The set menu had rare beef and salmon, both of which my wife can't eat. The head waiter was very snooty and wouldn't change to something off of this menu.
