The Worsley Arms Hotel is a 19th-century property in the village of Hovingham, set in the Howardian Hills in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire. The village has been home to the Worsley family since 1563 and has a shop, a café, a pub, a bakery and a monthly village market. The hotel has a homely feel, with sofas, a log fire and a large garden to explore.

Guests can eat from the à la carte menu in either the main restaurant or the Cricketers Bar, and you can choose your wine from the hotel's own wine cellar. Produce is locally sourced, including the game and venison from the Hovingham Estate and the lamb from the local village of Coulton. The bar also serves lighter meals.

National Trust property Nunnington Hall is a 5-minute drive from the hotel, and the small market town of Thirsk is 30 minutes away. Author James Herriot, writer of All Creatures Great and Small, lived here. You can learn about him at the World of James Herriot Visitor Attraction.

The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, where you'll find the coastal towns of Whitby and Staithes, and the fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay, is just over an hour's drive away. You can go on walks from Hovingham or drive to the North York Moors National Park or The Yorkshire Dales National Park, which is 50 miles away.

Enjoyed Most: The price

Enjoyed Most: The location: range of walks from the doorstep.
Other Comments: We didn't try the restaurant: we wanted a hearty meal after our walks and the only vegetarian option was goat's cheese based (even the smell of it makes me heave) served with a beetroot mousse and salad.
