This 12th-century coaching inn is in the village of Westleton within the Yox Valley, about three miles from Dunwich on the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Inside it's relaxed, with cosy enclaves, where you can sit on the sofas while reading one of the hotel's books, or study the huge map on the wall to plan your next walk. Expect wood burners, beamed ceilings, exposed brickwork and rustic furniture.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stayed here on their first wedding anniversary and had a full English breakfast the next morning in the Garden Room conservatory, which has floor-to-ceiling windows and walls decorated with photographs of the north Suffolk coast.

Dining here can be as extravagant as you like -- choose a hearty dish from the à la carte menu in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant or have a lighter meal in the traditional front bar. The kitchen uses produce from local butchers and fishermen, and the chefs bake fresh bread every day. There's also an ample wine list.

Each of the Best rooms have a roll-top bath big enough for two people, a heated bathroom mirror and towel rails, duck down duvets and free Wi-Fi.

Dogs are welcome and are given biscuits and a blanket when they arrive.

The 2.7-mile walk from The Westleton Crown to The Ship at Dunwich takes you through Westleton Heath National Nature Reserve. Minsmere -- owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds -- is an 8-minute drive away, and you can cycle along the nature trails through the woodlands or walk to see the coastal lagoons.

Southwold, nine miles away, has a bustling harbour, shops, a lighthouse and the Southwold Sailor's Reading Room, a small maritime museum. Aldeburgh, 20 minutes' drive from The Westleton Crown, is famed for being the home of composer Benjamin Britten. Visit The Red House where he lived and worked or walk along the Blue Flag shingle beach to see the pastel coloured houses on the promenade.

Enjoyed Most: Staff, especially Katie.
Other Comments: Although the deal said an upgraded room would be allocated if available, after booking almost a month ahead, we were told none was available as it was full on one night. There was room the other 2 nights and surely a customer booked in for 3 nights should get priority over a one night stay. The food was not up to the standard of a previous visit.

Enjoyed Most: The food. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent.

Enjoyed Most: Nothing wrong with the Crown, ideal for our visit to Dunwich and Minsmere, but........ Not the most communicative of staff, no idea whether we had the room upgrade, no one said anything and did not think to ask.
Other Comments: At £150 per night very expensive for the area and overpriced, not worth the money at all. The food is expensive as well, £14.75 for fish and chips, taking the p**s. Will not be going back, will plan trip earlier and book elsewhere at much more competetive rates.
