The 12th-century Westleton Crown is in the Suffolk village of Westleton, within the Yox Valley. Inside this "charming" (The AA Hotel Guide 2017) hideaway you'll find cosy nooks where you can leaf through the hotel's books, and a huge map on the wall for planning local walks. Expect wood burners, beamed ceilings, exposed brickwork and rustic furnishings.

You can dine in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant or in the traditional bar. The kitchen uses produce from local butchers and fishermen, and the chefs bake fresh bread every morning. The hotel also holds an AA Notable Wine List 2016-2017 accolade for its diverse selection of high-quality wines.

Best Rooms have roll-top baths big enough for two people, duck-down duvets and free Wi-Fi. Dogs are welcome for £7.50 per night, and are given biscuits and a blanket on arrival.

The 2.7-mile walk from The Westleton Crown to The Ship at Dunwich takes you through Westleton Heath National Nature Reserve, which is covered in swathes of pink heather. Minsmere -- owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds -- is less than 10 minutes' drive away, and you can cycle along the nature trails through woodland or navigate the coastal lagoons on foot.

Southwold is less than 20 minutes' drive away, and it is home to a bustling harbour, a lighthouse and the Southwold Sailor's Reading Room -- a small maritime museum. Aldeburgh is also 20 minutes' drive from The Westleton Crown, and is famed for being the home of composer Benjamin Britten. Visit The Red House where he lived and worked, or walk along the shingle beach to see the pastel-coloured houses on the promenade.

The food.

We had the Kingfisher room, a good sized room with bath and shower. As the website suggests, they have water pressure the like of which I have never experienced before. Dinner was very good, though they were exceptionally busy (it is popular) and service slower than usual, staff kept apologising. Breakfast was also very good, a wide selection of juices, cereals, fruit, yogurt etc. We would or rather will go back there again for all the above and it is ideally located for touring that part of Suffolk.
