"With so many big, boring corporate chain hotels in Cardiff, it's a breath of fresh air", says The Times about the quirky Jolyon's at No.10. The owners have filled this Victorian building with crystal chandeliers, flashes of red and purple, antique armoires and Chesterfield-style armchairs. It's a unique property just 10 minutes from the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Castle.
The banks of the River Taff and the Taff Trail (which stretches 55 miles to Brecon and is popular with cyclists) are visible from the hotel's windows. You can take a water taxi to the modern Cardiff Bay development where there are restaurants, bars, shops and the Wales Millennium Centre (home to the Welsh National Opera) -- the journey takes 15 minutes.
The hotel itself is home to a lively bar and restaurant, Cwtch Mawr (Welsh for 'big cuddle'). The Wales rugby team reportedly pops in for a beer after training at the stadium, and it is busy until late on the weekends. In the morning, a continental breakfast buffet of cereals, toast and croissants is laid out, with a cooked menu (including Welsh sausages) available to order.
The 21 rooms include Compact, Deluxe and Suite types. There is no air conditioning (although fans are provided), but the décor is soothing here with vintage furniture and a muted colour scheme. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the Suites have kitchenettes, a separate living room and Japanese-style plunge baths.
