For "cheerful Roman hospitality and fantastic value," Hotel Modigliani is an excellent bet, says Frommer's. This charming little property is a warm and welcoming hotel, run by married couple Giulia and Marco. Not only is it a great budget pick, it also has a good location, a five-minute walk from the Spanish Steps and the Via Veneto. Most sites, including the Trevi Fountain (10 minutes) and the Pantheon (20 minutes), are within walking distance, and it is two blocks from Barberini metro station.
Guests can use the Wi-Fi in the comfortable lounge for free (there's a charge to use it in the bedrooms), and there's a small elevator to help with luggage. Outside there's a small patio filled with potted plants where fresh fruit, pastries and cappuccinos are served for breakfast in the summer; in the winter, breakfast is taken in the airy breakfast room. At lunchtime, this room becomes a cozy Italian café, serving pizza, pasta and sandwiches, washed down with local wine. For dinner, Fodor's recommends the popular Il Leoncino nearby for quality pizza at excellent prices.
The small, traditional rooms are comfortable and clean, and all have air-conditioning. Beds are pretty firm, as is the norm in Italy, and the walls are adorned with charming black-and-white photographs of Rome, taken by Marco. Some rooms have balconies, but these are smaller, and the showers can be a bit of a squeeze. Opt for a Superior Room for more space -- the one to the rear (602) has the best views, stretching as far as the colossal Vittorio Emanuele II monument.
