Why We Love This Hotel

  • The AA calls Langley a "magnificent 14th-century fortified castle" with "stylish" bedrooms
  • It has a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, a drawing room and a cosy bar -- you may even spot the odd peacock in the castle grounds
  • The Daily Telegraph describes the hotel as "the real deal: a 14th-century castle - all battlements and seven-foot thick walls", while the Manchester Evening News says it has an "abundance of historical intrigue and romance"
  • The hotel sits on a scenic road over the North Pennines, around 10 minutes' drive from the pretty market town of Hexham

"Langley Castle is set in a beautiful location and is a fabulous 14th century medieval building. We were on honeymooon there for a couple of days and had made staff aware of this beforehand. However there were no special touches or congratulations and I felt that the staff lacked the 5 star customer service skills one would expect at such a venue. I work in the tourist industry and would know good customer service and bad. Langley Castle has the potential to be a fantastic hotel if staff had a bit more training and just went that extra mile."

Overview

Looking like something out of a fairy tale, Langley Castle is a true medieval fortress, complete with castellated turrets, stained glass and resident peacocks. The property was built in 1350 and, after years of neglect, was sympathetically restored in the 19th century by a local historian and his wife. Now Grade I-listed, it is "England's only medieval fortified castle to welcome paying guests" (Frommer's) and makes for a truly unique stay.

The Deluxe Castle Rooms in the main building are something special, with 7-foot walls, 4-poster beds and a spa bath or private sauna in the bathrooms. Standard rooms aren't located in the castle itself, but do overlook it and are furnished in Baronial style, with canopy beds and plenty of drapes. Castle View Suites in the coach house are perfect for families, and have curtains to divide the bed from the living space and a separate sofa bed for the kids. Dogs are welcome in selected rooms for £20 per night (please enquire on booking).

In the mornings, the continental buffet is supplemented by cooked-to-order hot dishes, such as a full Scottish breakfast or eggs Benedict. After breakfast, you can join the daily 10:15am battlement tour.

Sycamore Gap (often referred to as Robin Hood's Tree) and Housesteads Roman Fort, an English Heritage site on Hadrian's Wall, are less than 20 minutes' drive away. For more modern culture, drive 40 minutes east to Newcastle, "the hipster capital of the northeast" (Lonely Planet).

Come nightfall, the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant turns to fine dining, with a regularly changing 5-course set menu that The AA describes as "thrilling". Afternooon tea is served daily from 2-5:30pm, and scones, jam and cream are available at any time.

The hotel won the award for North East Hotel of the Year 2018 at the North East Tourism Awards, and it seems Travelzoo members agree -- 99% of members who reviewed their stay loved it, praising the "glorious setting", "amazing food", "excellent service" and "brilliant castle tour".

Fantastic room but access is very difficult because of the many stairs. Some of the male servers could do with further customer service training however all the female staff were friendly and efficient and attentive. The food was exemplary
