Overview

Bournemouth's "glorious" (Lonely Planet) 7-mile sandy beach attracts the sun-seekers but its the "hip hideaways" and "great restaurants" that hook them. East Cliff, home to The Cumberland Hotel, is a great spot to enjoy this and "superb" panormic views of the bay.

The beach is less than 10 minutes' walk from the hotel, and the bustling town centre brimming with shops, a range of restaurants and bars 20 minutes' walk away.

Hengistbury Head, a headland, nature reserve and conservation area with views of Chistchurch harbour and Bournemouth, is around an hour and half's walk along the beach.

Sandbanks beach is less than 20 minutes' drive away and has views of Studland Nature Reserve and Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Poole is less than 25 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Old Harry Rocks, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door -- a natural rock formation on the Jurassic Coast -- are less than an hour from the hotel.

The 4-star boutique hotel has an "impressive" and "striking" (The AA) Art Deco design, while many bedrooms are "in keeping with the hotel's original character". It has two restaurants, the Mirabelle Restaurant and the 2-AA-Rosette-awarded, Ventana Grand Café.

Very nice stay. Good food and staff. Only gripe really was the complimentary bottle of wine! We asked to change it for red and got a rose as they said they did not have red! We did eventually get a bottle of red but this wine (Silver Bay Point) was like fruit juice as it was only 8%. Not proper wine! The Cumberland said the wine was provided by our Travel Agent and not them. Probably better off not offering it, bit of an insult really!

It was fabulous! Food was delicious, staff were friendly and helpful, everywhere seemed clean, tidy and well looked after. We were 2 females enjoying a 2 night early December package at this attractive Art Deco hotel and wishing we could stayed longer. Our room was excellent and the only reason I had to mark it down slightly is because on our 2nd night we were woken, and kept awake for over an hour, by a 'gentleman' next door talking loudly on his mobile phone. On hearing our plight, the receptionist kindly and immediately knocked on his door and tried ringing the room, sadly to no avail.

It's in a wonderful location with full sea view, clifftop and beach walks (and cycling) in both directions, handy nearby bus services as well as being convenient for the railway station. Bournemouth area has so much to offer and I think The Cumberland is the best place to stay!
