Map & Directions

Getting there: The A167(M) is the closest motorway. Follow the signs for St James' Park. Parking is available at a car park opposite, but is first-come, first-served. The cost is £8 for 24 hours. The train station is a 10-minute walk away, or a couple of minutes by taxi (costing about £4).

When it opened in 2013, the Sandman Signature Newcastle Hotel was the Canadian hotel chain's first in the UK. The site was once home to the Scottish & Newcastle brewery's headquarters -- a prime position in the city centre.

The hotel overlooks St James' Park stadium, and is walking distance from Newcastle Central Station, Eldon Square Shopping Centre and Chinatown. The restaurants and bars on the Quayside are a little further, about 30 minutes on foot, or a short taxi journey.

The hotel is listed in The Michelin Guide, and has a lively bar/restaurant on site. The Shark Club Gastro Bar is open until late seven nights a week and shows sport on its 32 HDTVs. It's popular with guests and locals, and serves a pub grub including burgers, chicken wings, steaks and curries. There's a small gym on the top floor, with cardio equipment and free weights.

The bedrooms are modern, with splashes of colour and local photography on the walls, and all have at least a microwave and a mini bar -- upgrade to at least a Corporate King Studio for a kitchenette, including a hob, a toaster, a kettle and cooking utensils. Wi-Fi is free. There is a shop next door for any essentials. Ask for a room on a higher floor if you are concerned about noise (particularly on a match day).
