This classic Hilton hotel has been built on one of the UK’s best-known cricket grounds, Southampton’s The Ageas Bowl. But it’s not just for cricket fans (or music lovers -- the ground has hosted acts such as The Who and Oasis). Countryside views and easy access to the local area make it a great option for a weekend getaway.
Southampton offers a variety of museums and galleries, along with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars, and you can explore the city’s long maritime history at SeaCity Museum, 20 minutes’ drive from the hotel. Further afield, there’s historic Winchester, the South Downs National Park and the New Forest National Park, all less than 30 minutes’ drive away.
Back at the hotel, there are two options for hungry guests. Beefy’s, despite the name (it’s a cricketing thing), is a fine dining restaurant offering dishes such as seared scallops with Hampshire black pudding, or braised pig cheek with tarragon. The Lakeview Sports Bar offers lighter bites and pub-style fare as well as several large plasma TV screens. Other amenities include a fitness centre and a spa, which has 8 treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy pool, thermal suites and a nail bar (charges apply).
Rooms are decorated in contemporary style, and many have balconies with views of the cricket stadium or the soon-to-be golf course (due to open in 2016). All have desks, 42-inch TVs and free WiFi. If you need more space, family rooms, executive rooms and suites are also available.
