The Royal Hotel Cardiff

Why We Love This Hotel

  • A historic property with an Italianate façade, The Royal Hotel has been open since 1866
  • Past visitors include Captain Scott, who held a farewell banquet here before embarking on his fateful Antarctic expedition
  • Its central location means it’s close to the iconic Millennium Stadium & Cardiff Castle

Housed in a Grade II listed Victorian building (featuring an Italianate façade and dating from 1866), The Royal Hotel is Cardiff’s oldest hotel, and brilliantly located for a city break in the Welsh capital.

The hotel sits on St Mary Street, close to St David’s Shopping Centre and the restaurants and bars of the Brewery Quarter. You’re only 7 minutes’ walk from the iconic Millennium Stadium, home to international sporting events and concerts, while history buffs are just 5 minutes’ walk from Cardiff Castle, standing tall in all in its Victorian Gothic glory on Norman and Roman ruins.

There’s no restaurant on site, but the lounge bar serves hot food in the evenings from Monday to Saturday. The hotel’s dinner package includes a two-course evening meal at an Italian restaurant across the road. If you didn’t opt for the package you can still eat there and charge the meal to your hotel bill. Breakfast (continental or full Welsh) is served in the Captain Scott room, where the ill-fated explorer held a farewell dinner in 1910 before embarking on his Antarctic expedition. Honey served at breakfast comes straight from the beehives kept on the 6th floor rooftop terrace, which guests can visit.

The 60 modern bedrooms feature HD TVs and free WiFi, in addition to tea and coffee-making facilities, ironing boards and hairdryers. All have city centre views (some look out to the Millennium Stadium), while Deluxe rooms offer a free bottle of wine for every night booked.
