"Check in was easy; our room was at the far end of the hotel, overlooking the main road. The room was big and bright. Very comfortable bed and sufficient storage for clothing as only there for one night. Fridge in room (inside wardrobe). Large double shower in bathroom. The only issue is that the blinds have been fitted outside of window frame, which leaves a gap and makes viewing outside (and possibly inwards) quite easy. As this is a listed building the windows in the bathroom are sash and not opaque. Good selection of toiletries and towels. Iron, ironing board and hairdryer in wardrobe. Good selection of tea, coffee available in room The main issue was around service. We went downstairs to have cocktails and saw the waitress. She told us to take a seat and she would be with us momentarily. Ten minutes later she arrived, took our order and another 10 minutes before we got our drinks. No further checks to see if we wanted to place another round so had to go looking again. 2nd order did not take as long. In the restaurant for evening meal, we were the only ones seated for 20+ minutes so no atmosphere. We ordered a vegetable side dish that did not come out until we had almost finished our dish. However, food was very well made and good selection. I can recommend the goats cheese bon bons and the duck dish. The 3 choc sample dish for desert was quite rich with the dark chocolate choice. We had drinks afterwards in one of the front rooms and service was a little quicker. Breakfast was good - nice choice on the continental table but the issue we had with the cooked breakfast was not everything that was ordered came out and this was repeated on the opposite table as well. Coffee was exceptionally strong, so stick with tea. We had a afternoon tea included; the options were not explained very well - there were two afternoon choices, but that only became clearer as we placed our order. If you do not finish everything they will box up your leftovers."

Overview

Built in 1619 by attorney Rees Jones, The Feathers Hotel was converted into an inn by 1670 and is one of the most well-known Grade I-listed buildings in Ludlow. The ornately half-timbered building features motifs of the Prince of Wales's feathers, from which the hotel gets its name.

Former Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom John Betjeman once described Ludlow as "probably the loveliest town in England". Once a site of frequent clashes between English and Welsh forces, Ludlow has a ruinous 12th-century castle and some of its medieval town walls still survive, as does Broadgate -- one of the seven medieval gates to the town. Head to Ludlow Museum and the castle to learn more about Ludlow's history -- both are less than five minutes walk from The Feathers.

Ludlow also has many fine Georgian buildings, and you can take in excellent views of the Welsh Marches from the top of the tower of St Laurence's Church, also five minutes' walk from the hotel.

The Feathers Hotel received a £2 million refurbishment in 2019, with the bedrooms reopening in December. The Feathers Tea Room provides a selection of freshly baked scones, cakes and savouries prepared using local ingredients, while the Plume@Feathers Restaurant serves more local and seasonal produce alongside their carefully curated wine list. Both the Tea Room and Restaurant have maintained plenty of traditional décor to admire, while being refreshed for the 21st century.

All 42 bedrooms have been refurbished to a high standard. Classic rooms feature an ensuite bathroom, king-size bed and a lounge area.

You will definitely need to get there before check in time (on weekends - cannot comment on mid week bookings) because the car park fills up quickly and on street parking is chargeable. Parking can be quite tight so manoeuvring around the car park - take care. The hotel is directly opposite the Natwest Bank; missed it first drive by due to discreet entry and number of pedestrians walking past. In addition, I would highly recommend ringing before hand to book your table in the restaurant (we could not get the time we wanted on arrival).

I was happy to try out this hotel after its recent refurbishment. I can praise the staff and the food but not the general ambience or our room. The public rooms are beautifully decorated but unless you sat next to the log fire you were cold as there was no heating. This ruined the atmosphere. Im sure we would have had a better room had we not been on a “deal”. The room was nicely decorated but sadly the facilities were not good. Monogrammed towels, but no wardrobe or any type of clothes hanging space, not even a hook on the back of the door to hang your coat up! A hairdryer, but no mirror in the room to use it with! Had we had a well equipped room, Im sure we would have booked again, without a deal. But this experience in a “ classic”room means our next stay in Ludlow will be at a dufferent hotel.

We had to cancel the booking due to self isolation as we both over 70. We phoned the hotel on 17th March. We would like to defer our booking until later in the year. The hotel said they would be happy to do this and were waiting to hear from Travelzoo. Would you please let me know your policy. I just starred anything so I could continue with review.

Beautifully refurbished room with big TV, very comfortable bed, lovely bathroom and very quiet, excellent breakfast and dinner and afternoon tea. Really friendly and helpful staff. Very central location in town. Good for wandering to the market, around the lovely shops and for walking. Plenty of interesting things to do.

Beautiful historic building completely refurbished May 19. V good breakfast but only problem was sorting out the bill which got into a real mess. We queried it (charged twice for the same drinks) but it was only after we left the hotel but not Ludlow, that we returned again to finally agree we had been overcharged by £82 (2 couples). £30 dinner allowance had only been applied to 1 person and not all 4. It was sorted amicably but we could easily have just paid up and left. Great hotel- poor bill management.
