The 3-star Belstead Brook Muthu Hotel was once a 16th-century hunting lodge and is set among extensive gardens. It’s a 10-minute drive to Ipswich town centre and 30 minutes to the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the heart of Constable Country (named after the painter John Constable, who painted the scenery around the River Stour).

Gainsborough’s House (once home to artist Thomas Gainsborough) and the Anglo-Saxon royal burial site of Sutton Hoo are also about half an hour’s drive away.

Back at the hotel, there’s a leisure club with an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room and a gym. Spa treatments are available on request and there’s also a baby pool. The oak-panelled Manor Restaurant serves British fare throughout the day, starting with a full English breakfast, plus kippers, porridge, yoghurt, fruit and pastries. The bar serves lighter meals in a more casual setting.

The rooms are spacious with a somewhat traditional décor, and have free Wi-Fi. There are tea- and coffee-making facilities and the upgraded rooms each have a small balcony. Ask for a garden view if possible.

Enjoyed Most: The Staff were very friendly, hotel had nice grounds. Massage was good
Other Comments: The hotel needs a lot of TLC to get it up to reasonable standards. The hotel was not very clean, a lot of dusty surfaces, dirty floors and chipped paint.

Enjoyed Most: We enjoyed our stay, staff and food were very good.
Other Comments: The room we stayed in 308, was comfortable but needs a good clean in the bathroom, mouldy on tiles and walls very grubby.

Other Comments: Rooms a little tired. Bathroom badly in need of updating.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel itself. Full of character. Lovely grounds. Friendly staff. Enjoyed all our meals.
Other Comments: Lovely room overlooking gardens. Very clean. Would imagine they will upgrade the bathroom soon. Everywhere else was well decorated.

Enjoyed Most: Very good value for money through the Travel Zoo deal. Swimming pool is great.
Other Comments: As stated in other reviews the rooms are going to be refurbished so we were expecting old furniture/decoration etc so not a problem. However, the bathroom was grubby and light fittings dirty. There was no information pack in the room about the hotel which is unusual.

Enjoyed Most: Lovely hotel and staff, shame about the disturbance.
Other Comments: Fire alarm faulty- it went off around 6 times during our stay including twice at 4am!

Enjoyed Most: We really enjoyed the executive garden room and the swimming pool/jacuzzi. The reception staff were friendly annd helpful. One of the staff kindly changed my sheets at short notice.
Other Comments: The only thing that let down the room was the bathroom other than that the rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable and spacious. It's was a nice touch that it has a garden view. It's a nice hotel and looks quite luxurious in reception

Enjoyed Most: Having a room upgrade (which I had to ask for) and use of the spa facilities
Other Comments: It wasn't made clear that the £5 food credit could only to be used in the restaurant despite asking when checking in. On checking out they told me the entitlement wasn't allowed on bar food, however they honoured credit. Thought the bar food was not as good as it should have been so a bit disappointed.
