Why We Love This Hotel

  • This 16th-century hotel has a walled garden and is in the centre of Winchester
  • The Garden Restaurant, housed in a conservatory, serves a wide selection of local cheeses, and is praised by The Daily Telegraph for its "largely homemade and absolutely delicious" food
  • Winchester Cathedral and the local shops are within a 5-minute walk
  • Jane Austen's House Museum is a 25-minute drive away

With its medieval architecture, magnificent cathedral and nearby South Downs countryside, Winchester is a great destination for a mini break. The Winchester Royal Hotel is in the centre of town and is the only hotel in the city that has a walled garden -- nicknamed the "secret garden" by locals.

Originally a private house, the property then became a bishop's residence and later a convent, and has been a hotel for the past 150 years. The Garden Restaurant, which has views of the walled garden and terrace, serves modern European dishes and has a large collection of local cheeses. The Daily Telegraph praises its "largely homemade and absolutely delicious" food.

From the hotel, The Great Hall, an atmospheric 13th-century hall featuring a medieval round table said to be linked to King Arthur, is less than 10 minutes' walk away, while Winchester Cathedral and the high street are five minutes away.

We recommend a stroll alongside the River Itchen from the National Trust-owned Winchester City Mill to College Street, where you can see Winchester College and the house Jane Austen lived in for the last few months of her life.

Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium is a 15-minute drive away.

The dinner bed and breakfast deal on Travel zoo excellent value. The food ( we had fish for the main course) was fresh, beautifully cooked and delicious . The breakfast was also excellent. The hotel lounge and bar seemed a little dated, but the central position of the hotel made up for that! Hotel parking is limited, we had to park in the town carpark, 4 mins walk away which wasnt a problem for us. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. We visited in December so had the bonus of the Winchester Christmas market.

Great location for Christmas shopping. Food and accommodation was good value for our package deal with Travelzoo. Staff very friendly.

One minor criticism is that our room in the annexe was overlooked by an office block. Our windows had no blinds for privacy requiring the curtains to be drawn to achieve such ! Finally the water was cut off during our last morning due to a burst pipe or similar through no fault of the hotel. On checking out the receptionist kindly waived our extras worth around £50 as a gesture without being asked to do so. We will definitely return.

Other Comments
we arrived very early (9.50am) and there were several spare places in the hotel carpark, if you arrive closer to check-in time it would be a different story. parking on the Travelzoo deal is free, but on a first come, first served basis. the carpark is just before you reach the hotel, on the right hand side, it looks like a no entry, due to road markings, but there is only one way in/out.
