Even the most frazzled folks become as calm as the namesake lake when they arrive at Lake Placid Lodge, which wraps travelers in a cocoon of warm timbers, solid stone walls and nubby woolen blankets. A winding approach through pine forests ends on a bluff where the lodge overlooks the gently lapping, 2,000-acre body of water and rolling hills of the Adirondacks.

In the main lodge, hand-hewn wood beams prop up lounge areas that can open up to warm summer breezes or close in around the heat of a stone fireplace. In fact, the lodge seems to have more fireplaces per capita than anywhere else—50 total, crackling to life in the restaurants and lobby, and automatically lit at night in every guest room.

Rooms are rich with the trappings of mountain life. Custom beds are pieced together by hand from twisted branches and tree trunks, and topped with fur throws. Tucked beneath the trees closer to the shoreline, individual cabins offer enhanced privacy and rusticity. Walls of exposed stacked logs open to wide picture windows that flood with lake views. Outside there’s a duet of Adirondack chairs for romantic stargazing.

The region is full of outdoor adventures, starting with ice-skating at the doorstep when the water freezes over and snowshoeing through the woods. Whiteface Mountain is less than an hour’s drive away, and has the longest vertical ski drop on the east coast. When the snow melts, it reveals hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails, granite-faced rock climbing, whitewater rafting and horseback riding.

From the press:
  • “The service is impeccable and out of sight. Return from dinner and a fire has miraculously been lit in the stone fireplace, and wood replenished in a neatly stacked pile beside the hearth” -- Travel + Leisure
  • “It’s a true American treasure -- oozing with so much personality and love” -- Condé Nast Traveler
  • “Common areas are filled with an enchanting mix of textures, colors, and styles: Reclaimed French oak floors mingle with Hudson River school paintings, handcrafted birch and twig stools, Navajo rugs, whimsical pinecone animal sculptures, and antique red leather barrel seats” -- Frommer’s
