Lauded as the only 4-star property set in the Peak District National Park, Losehill House Hotel & Spa benefits from stunning views of the surrounding area from many a window. Add that to an award-winning restaurant, which has been named as one of the top places to eat by The Times and this is a special spot hidden in Hope Valley.

The pretty villages of Castleton and Edale are a pleasant walk (taking 60 minutes and 90 minutes respectively), and there are plenty of hikes in the area – walk along the Roman bridleway to the Win Hill summit to up to Mam Tor. Further afield, Chatsworth House is a 30-minute drive, and Haddon Hall is just a little further.

Back at the hotel, there’s a heated 10-metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room and spa with treatments available. The outdoor hot tub is open from 7am-9pm and has “stunning views over the valley” (The AA Hotel Guide). The Orangery Restaurant serves “sublime” (The Star) food fit for the picturesque backdrop, with two AA-Rosettes, and a menu praised for its “passion and pizazz” (The Star). Expect dishes such as pan fried scallops with pork belly and black pudding, Derbyshire lamb with a mini shepherd’s pie, and wild mushroom and spinach oatcake mille feuille with butternut squash purée. It is “a wonderfully tranquil setting for some serious fine dining”, says The Times.

Upstairs, there are 23 bedrooms with a simple, modern décor, free Wi-Fi, a DVD player and robes and slippers. Most of them have views of that rolling countryside.

Enjoyed Most: The room was lovely and the area.
Other Comments: the dinner service. Waited nearly 2 hours for the 3rd course of a 7 course meal and had to complain.

Other Comments: The Hotel was nice but we would not eat there again. The food was nice but the service was very poor. We had a 7 course tasting menu, the waitresses tried to give us the wrong food (next table along), this was common occurrence across all diners. When we were given the correct food the portions were tiny (even for a tasting menu) and it and it took them 2 hours to bring us two courses, when we complained the service did improve. The tasting menu didn't fill us at all and we ended going back to the room and eating a packet of biscuits.
