"Enjoyed our visit. Hotel in a good central location in the heart of Buxton, just close to the Opera House. Discount parking is good if you can grab a space on the busy street outside. Room was a large but a bit dated with a huge bed with a nice more modern bathroom. Meals were freshly prepared and tasty and staff were friendly and helpful. Great value for money and we would definitely come back as Buxton is a great base for walking in the summer."

Overview

Built in 1573, Old Hall Hotel is in the pretty market town of Buxton, which is surrounded by the Peak District National Park. It has welcomed some famous guests during its history -- Mary Queen of Scots stayed here while under house arrest in the 16th century, and author Daniel Defoe called it "a very special place".

The hotel sits opposite Buxton's Opera House and 12-acre Pavilion Gardens park -- there are picturesque views from the restaurant. It's an excellent base if you're exploring the nearby Peak District National Park, and it's an easy drive to Chatsworth House, the pretty village of Bakewell and many of the area's famous potteries.

Dinner can be taken in either the cosy Cockerel Wine Bar with the ambience of the old coaching inn, or in the stylish restaurant. Expect a menu of hearty British fare made with local, seasonal ingredients. Breakfast is made to order and includes dishes such as filled Derbyshire oatcakes.

The hotel has plenty of character, with original features throughout. Some rooms are on the smaller side and you may find the floors uneven, but this all adds to the property's charm. Wi-Fi is free and there are 4-poster beds in the upgraded rooms. The grandest -- Mary's Bower Room -- is believed to be part of the original building that "hosted" Mary Queen of Scots.

We arrived on a cold January afternoon, to a warm welcome. Parking across the road, we were able to buy a voucher for 24hrs, but suspect parking might be a problem in warmer weather later in the year. Our room was lovely, en suite good with a gorgeous deep bath! That evening we enjoyed a meal in the restaurant so much that we've booked to return in February when going to a gig at the Buxton Opera house. If you want a central location, this is the hotel to go for- 5 mins from railway station too.

Yes there is plenty to like about the Old Hall Hotel. In particular the staff were extremely pleasant and professional and cared about the service they were giving. I liked the informal lounges at the front of the hotel giving a comfortable place to relax. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and to stay there again once the bed problem has been fixed.
Other Comments
The four-poster bed was the most uncomfortable bed we have ever slept in. However, on mentioning this to the hotel management, they were outstanding in the way they listened to and dealt with the problem. I believe they did something about the bed within hours of my mentioning it.
