The Canterbury Hotel
Why We Love This Hotel
- The Georgian property dates back to 1785 and is a 10-minute walk from Canterbury City, the Cathedral and train station
- Reasonably priced with free Wi-Fi, breakfast & parking
- Bar has more than 100 single malt whiskies on the menu
- There’s an indoor pool & spa on site
Set in the Wincheap area, which is thought to be the site of the city’s markets, the Canterbury Hotel is a reasonably priced 3-star property with friendly staff and a convenient location just 15 minutes’ walk from the Cathedral and 6 minutes from the train station.
The Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the city itself is centuries old -- stroll through its pretty streets or along the river to soak up the atmosphere. Also worth a look is the Canterbury Tales exhibition, brought to life by Chaucer’s poetry. Further afield, the coastal town of Whitstable is only a 20-minute drive, home to the famous Oyster Festival.
The hotel has a heated indoor pool and Rose Garden Spa with massages available (charges apply), and the bar has more than 100 single malt whiskies, and a number of local beers. The restaurant does not serve lunch or dinner but a tasty breakfast is cooked to order (requests must be made the night before).
There are only 15 rooms on site, with free WiFi and tea and coffee-making facilities. Many have views of the pretty rose garden below, and two of the Superior Rooms have four-poster beds. Upgrade to the Canterbury Suite for a separate lounge, DVD player, fridge and a discount in the spa. There can be some road noise in those at the front, so ask for a room at the back if you’re a light sleeper. Some rooms are pet-friendly.
