One of Canterbury’s biggest draws is undoubtedly its Cathedral -- one of the oldest Christian buildings in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So where better to stay than on the grounds themselves? The Canterbury Cathedral Lodge is a modern 4-star B&B with impressive views from many rooms -- and guests get free entrance to the Cathedral (usually £10.50 per adult).
You’ll be staying in the centre of town, within easy reach of all the attractions the city has to offer, including The Canterbury Tales exhibition, brought alive by Chaucer’s poetry. Further afield, the coastal town of Whitstable, home of the famous Oyster Festival, is only a 20-minute drive.
There’s no real restaurant or bar on site but drinks can be served in the Library Room, where there are a number of books on the local area and a computer for guests to use. The hotel can recommend a number of nearby dining options, where guests will receive a 10% discount. Breakfast is included in the price and served in the Refectory Restaurant -- expect a continental breakfast buffet with hot dishes made to order, such as a full English breakfast, eggs benedict and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon.
The majority of the 35 bedrooms have Cathedral views (apart from those in a separate annexe), and WiFi is free. Some are a little on the small side and do not have a mini bar, but you’ll find tea and coffee-making facilities and homemade shortbread biscuits waiting for you on arrival.
