Overview

Kent tends to be where British travellers pass through on their way to France. A few gems make pausing worthwhile, however, and the Marquis at Alkham, consistently praised for its food, is definitely one.

The Marquis sits in the pretty village of Alkham, 15 minutes from Dover Port and 20 minutes from the Eurotunnel Terminal at Folkestone. Dover Castle and St Margaret’s at Cliffe (where Bond author Ian Fleming once lived) -- are also nearby, and Canterbury Cathedral is a 25-minute drive away.

The AA Restaurant Guide has awarded the restaurant two Rosettes and there’s no question that “food is the main draw here” (Condé Nast Traveller). Try the wild mushroom velouté and wild rabbit kiev, or the pan-roast Hythe sea bass -- or the 7-course tasting menu if you really can’t make up your mind. Afternoon tea and lunch are also served and in the morning, there’s a continental buffet with hot dishes cooked to order.

The hotel has 10 individually designed rooms, many of which have “fantastic views of the Kent Downs” (The AA Hotel Guide), plus two self-catering cottages. All classic rooms have monsoon showers, underfloor heating and free WiFi. Upgrade to a Deluxe Room for a Nespresso Coffee machine and a roll-top bath. An unconventional bathroom layout -- baths and showers in the bedroom, and a separate room for the toilet -- may not suit everyone, plus the road outside can be noisy, so light sleepers may want to request a room at the back.

The cottages are 20 minutes’ walk away, next to the hotel’s sister business, the Chalksole Estate Vineyard, and sleep up to four and six people. Guests are welcome to take a walk through the vines during their stay (it isn’t open to the public) and the vineyard’s sparkling wine is available in the restaurant.

Other Comments
There were a couple of things wrong in the room and with our meal on the second night. However, the hotel took comments on board and this was sorted before we left. We would not return purely because we have already experienced this location and it was too remote wth no other facilities close by, which meant if you did not like what was on the menu......you could be stuck!

Dinner excellent. Breakfast disappointing.
Other Comments
The rooms were looking slightly run down. Marks on walls, tired carpets, saggy mattress. Overall a good deal but would not want to pay full price to stay there.

We found it very hot in the restuarant, this made it slightly uncomfortable while eating, staff said heating was off. i upgraded our room but found the light fitting above the shower head hanging out, the light behind the bed was burnt out, they had put blackout blinds up but on curtain rails so the street light outside on the road still lit up the room. 1 tea bag no milk or water to boil in the kettle. we had to go and get milk from reception. we did not eat breakfast in the dineing area in the morning as it was still very hot, we paid extra for room service. staff great although when told about these problems it was a small apology. £92 bill on top of the travel zoo voucher. bit dissappointed.

in the morning they gave us the bottle of prosecco we should have had the night before. There was a bill with it which said it was worth £38!! If we had had that the night before we would have spent less on alcohol. The young staff need some training as per the Trip Advisor notes from others I read when i was reporting my experience..

We had booked the dinner bandb deal but i wanted 3 family members to join us for dinner as a surprise. we were close to home but having a change of scene. They agreed but said we had to pay £35 to upgrade the room as it was Twixmas. On the night we found out that we were allowed to have 3 people join us for dinner but forfeited the 4 course tasting menu and had to have a la carte for all 5 of us. No wine was offered so we bought it. The final dinner bill came in at an extra £213 for the meal. it seemed a bit steep given the meal we had initially expected would have been included and all around us people seemed to be having that! I just felt a bit screwed! We were bringing in extra custom after all, but the night ended up costing close to £300 in total! ok food but not THAT good! It wasn't haute cuisine. The room has a bathtub in the bedroom which is a bit odd. Not a problem but odd! Seems like a bathroom with a bed in it as it had a very prominent position
