Overview

The "instantly charming" Crystal Mountain resort is "the kind of high-touch resort experience more commonly found out West," says Chicago magazine. Most recognize this resort as a winter ski resort, but this four-season destination in Northern Michigan offers plenty of indoor and outdoor activities for guests of all ages.

Wintertime activities abound, of course, but first and foremost is skiing: Onthesnow.com praises Crystal Mountain as one of the best ski resorts in the Midwest. The resort's 58 downhill slopes serviced by sevenchairlifts offer runs for green-dot beginners to seasoned black-diamond down-hillers. Non-skiiers have options as well -- horse-drawn surrey rides are available on select days, as are snowshoe trails, ice hockey, snowmobile tours and fat-tire snow biking.

Warmer seasons don't slow down the on-site activities. Kids love the Alpine Slide, a sort of warm-weather bobsled ride. Tennis courts, disc golf, a climbing wall, outdoor pool, paintball and laser tag courses and a high-ropes adventure course are all on site. Golfers can choose between two Golf Digest-praised courses -- both the Mountain Ridge Course and Betsie Valley Course earn 4-star ratings. Fodor's Travel also recently named Crystal Mountain one of the 15 Best U.S. Resorts for Fall Getaways.

The resort features more than 240 hotel rooms, suites, condos, townhomes and resort residences, all against the backdrop of beautiful Northern Michigan. Nearly all units feature complimentary Wi-Fi. Select units are pet-friendly, and kids under 6 eat breakfast for free with a paying adult.

Multiple dining options are available throughout the resort including the Thistle Pub & Grille, as well as an on-site grocery and bistro for sandwiches and pizzas as well as beer and wine. The full-service, 18,500 square foot Crystal Spa offers Swedish massage, aromatherapy baths, body wraps and nail services along with amenities like heated floors, steam rooms, infrared saunas and an outdoor garden with a hot tub.

If you're looking to explore a little more of Northern Michigan, head 28 miles north to find out why Midwest Living named Traverse City the "Greatest Midwest Town." The idyllic Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, once named the Most Beautiful Place in America by ABC's Good Morning America, is a 40-minute drive away.

Beautiful area, friendly staff.

Rated low on Ambiance and Room categories since our room was right across the new addition to the hotel which is under construction so the view was less than stellar also the noise started early on Saturday.

There were many paths to hike on. It was clean with a friendly atmosphere.

The parking lot was almost empty yet we were given a room that overlooked the construction site. It seems like we could have had a room with a much better view. We left a day early because of the rain that was moving inIt was nice that we were able to get a refund for our 2nd night.

The location is beautiful. The cottage interior design and courtyards were very nice. The front desk staff was helpful. Just wish that whole process was better thought trough and was smoother.
Other Comments
The room that we initially received was facing an active construction site. Facing the construction site would not only defeat the purpose of driving 3 hours out of the city limits to unite with the nature, but it would also leave no hope of catching up on the sleep we needed. We asked to be transferred to a different room and were given a nice room in a different building. The only problem - the room was not ready. Beds were not made, bathroom not cleaned, dishes not washed, carpet not vacuumed. No house maintenance staff on the premises on Sunday evening to do it either. We were transferred for the thrid time into a very nice cottage. It made up for the earlier troubles, but we would be equally content with either of the previous accommodations if they were ready for the new guests. After all of the transfers we decided to visit the restaurant on-site for a dinner. The food was overpriced and not very tasty. The service was unattentive.
