Over 120 years ago, the founder and editor of Life magazine constructed an office building with the help of the design firm responsible for the New York Public Library’s 42nd Street branch. The beaux-arts building is located on West 31st Street and originally included crash-pad apartments for overworked employees like Norman Rockwell and Charles Gibson. In April 2017, the property opened its doors as Life Hotel, paying homage to its history by maintaining charming details like wood molding, high ceilings, marble floors and cast-iron columns.

The hotel dates back to the late 1800s, but all 98 guest rooms are equipped with contemporary comforts like 60-inch TVs paired with Google Chromecast for streaming, Egyptian cotton bedding, all-natural bath products and free Wi-Fi. Each room includes refillable water bottles, replacing plastic bottles, and filtered water stations are located on three floors for refills. Groups traveling together can book suites with adjoining rooms to sleep as many as six adults. Over 200 original works by local artists were commissioned to decorate the rooms, which are outfitted with brass beds and light fixtures and marble bathrooms with rainfall showers.

Guests have 24-hour access to the hotel’s fitness center, which will feature Peloton stationary bicycles starting this summer. Later in the season, the hotel will unveil its restaurant and bar. The same hospitality group behind top-rated NYC dining spots like Dos Caminos and Blue Water Grill will offer small plates at Life Restaurant. For cocktails, guests can walk down the 130-year-old staircase to the basement bar, once a speakeasy for Life staffers during Prohibition -- 1920s liquor bottles were unearthed during the excavating process.

Guests of Life Hotel need not look far to find quintessential New York City entertainment and activities -- the shops at Herald Square, the Empire State Building and Madison Square Gardens are all within a 10-minute walk.

This was a great deal and great location! The woman who worked at the breakfast and happy hour was wonderful and both were great. The donuts were amazing! The front desk/check out staff could have been more friendly/helpful but overall the experience was very good. I highly recommend it.

Clean rooms and great location. Also, very quiet, which isn't always easy to find in NYC.

It's quite under construction, rather dark, but that's temporary. Room was bright and roomy, bathroom was terrific.

The price was great for a mid-town hotel. The room was large enough that it did not feel cramped. The happy hour was great, free beer and wine and a small selection of veggies, meats and cheese. The staff was friendly but check in was very slow.
Other Comments
The hotel lobby was under construction so that was not great but I know that is why we got such a good price. The breakfast helped us save money by not having to eat elsewhere.

It will probably be very nice when construction is completed - but this will be at least 6 more months.

It would have been nice to know in advance that the hotel is undergoing a major renovation. Lots of construction noise, NO restaurant, NO bar!

The history of the building and its location. The rooms were just what I expected; comfortable and fit with the period of the building.
Other Comments
It will be a great hotel when all renovations are finished.

I bought this as a gift. They were supposed to charge my card 72 hours in advance. Instead they made my guests pay when they arrived, at first saying my card was declined but later admitting that it was approved but only for a pre-authorization.
