Overview

With its Georgian buildings, winding streets and Roman baths, Bath is "the grandest and most elegant" city in England, according to Condé Nast Traveller. It can also be on the expensive side, but the 4-star Bailbrook Lodge is a reasonably priced option less than 10 minutes' drive from the city centre.

It has 15 bedrooms, five of which are Four Poster bedrooms, with views of the property's pretty gardens and the Avon Valley beyond. Rooms are individually designed with DVD players, iPod docking stations, cotton slippers and tea- and coffee-making facilities as standard in all rooms, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. There is no lift, so ask for a ground-floor room if anyone in your party has mobility requirements.

Cooked breakfast is made to order, and there is also a choice of pastries, cereal and fruit. Snacks, including afternoon tea, are served in the lounge throughout the day and there's a small bar. There is no on-site restaurant serving lunch or dinner but there are plenty of restaurants 10 minutes' drive away in central Bath, including Brasserie Brunel at sister property the Royal Hotel Bath. There are other dining options including riverside pubs within 10 minutes' walk of the hotel.

The hotel has plenty of free off-street parking, but finding parking in the city can be tricky. There is a bus stop a 5-minute walk from the property with a regular service into the city centre.

Due to half term week we had to make do with the smallest bedroom in the house which was not pleasant. Squeezing around the bed was all that was possible. The rear en-suite bathroom was freezing and needs a new heated towel rail above the end of the bath in addition to the old radiator which only heats up top half and that is tepid. It should be changed as well for a new radiator. The wind wips through the ill fitting glass and the window requires complete overhaul to open and close properly - it is currently painted shut and is unpleasant. The fabric of the Bathroom is so cold that there are cold bridging marks on the floor tiling adjacent to the rear wall. The room should really have an electric underfloor heating mat installed if you are going to rent it out. I imagine it is not used too often! I would not go in it again but the hotel was full so I understand the need to use the room. It must be upgraded however urgently if you want to rent it out.
