With its Georgian buildings, winding streets and Roman baths, Bath is "the grandest and most elegant" city in England, according to Condé Nast Traveller. It can also be on the expensive side, but the 4-star Bailbrook Lodge is a reasonably priced option less than 10 minutes' drive from the city centre.

It has 15 bedrooms with views of the property's pretty gardens and the Avon Valley beyond. Rooms are all different shapes and sizes, but DVD players, iPod docking stations, cotton slippers and tea- and coffee-making facilities are standard in all rooms, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. There is no lift, so ask for a ground-floor room if anyone in your party has mobility requirements.

Cooked breakfast is made to order, and there is also a choice of pastries, cereal and fruit. Snacks, including afternoon tea, are served in the lounge throughout the day and there's a small bar. There is no on-site restaurant serving dinner but there are a multitude of dining options in Bath. Brasserie Brunel (picture 6/7) is located at sister property The Royal Hotel, 10 minutes' drive.

There is plenty of free off-street parking, but finding parking in the city can be tricky. There is a bus stop a 5-minute walk from the hotel with a regular service into the city centre.

Other Comments: The breakfast buffet was comprehensive and very high quality and there was the option of a glass of champagne or Buck's Fizz if you wished. The table linen and settings made a pleasant ambiance and the service was swift and friendly. Ground coffee and a cafetiere in our room was very welcome.

Enjoyed Most: Polite efficient staff served breakfast Authentic building, nicely decorated room.
Other Comments: Size of bedroom, cleanliness of bathroom.(thick dust on radiator pipes) poor quailty bathroom, sink was in bedroom, chair too near main door- only one person could get in and out of bedroom door at one time. Difficult to open and close window. Not sufficient hot water to shower in. It was adequate but not special

Enjoyed Most: We were upgraded to a four poster after pointing out one was free! The room was very spacious with a lovely view over gardens. The young man who served breakfast was very polite and attentive. Breakfast was really good, well cook and lots of choice, with free champagne if wanted. The rate below for staff as one star was for the 'lady' who booked us in, five stars would be for the young man who served breakfast. When scoring below I put four poster unavailable, as this was their first response. Travelzoo should check if anyone else is being told the upgrade rooms are unavailable, when clearly they are!
Other Comments: The welcome on arrival was very disappointing. We arrived at 1pm, as we got out of the car a woman with a cigarette in her hand was shouting 'Can I help you?', I said yes we are here to check in. It was obvious that we were not welcome, as we were told checking in is at 2pm. We didn't expect to go to our room an hour early, but even when we asked if we could come in for a drink, the answer was a flat no! Even though they have a lounge there and a small drinks bar! We were told to go down the road and not come back until later! On returning at 2pm, things were not much better. We asked if the hotel was full, we were told they had a twin, a double and a four poster free. We were shown to a very small cramped double room, with a tiny bathroom. Part of the deal through Travelzoo was an upgrade to a four poster if available! We went back to the woman on reception and mentioned the upgrade, straight away was told 'sorry but we don't have a four poster available.' Blatant lie!

Enjoyed Most: Overall stay was very good, cream afternoon tea and breakfast were very good, The extras and cosines were a treat.
Other Comments: There was a leak in our bedroom ceiling which we put the waste bin underneath to keep the bedroom carpet dry, this dripping did keep us awake, otherwise a comfy bed.
