The Elms Hotel & Spa is an impressive manor house in 10 acres of grounds, an hour's drive from Birmingham. Families are more than welcome here -- there is an Ofsted-registered crèche offering guests a free 2-hour session per day, outdoor play areas to explore, early dinner times and tailored menus. Mums and dads are well looked after too with an indoor pool and a spa, plus adult-only dinners in the restaurant.

Nearby, Wyre Forest Nature Reserve is a good spot for walking and cycling, and is home to Go Ape (a high-wire treetop challenge). Witley Court and Gardens is less than a 10-minute drive, and the West Midland Safari Park and Severn Valley Steam Railway are 30 minutes by car.

Back at the hotel, there is a croquet lawn, tennis courts, a tree swing and a fairy trail to follow around the gardens. Much of the herbs, vegetables and fruit used in the restaurant are grown here, and the greenhouse has more obscure plants including Venus flytraps. Older children will be taken with the Xboxes, the air hockey machine and the DVD library in the games room. The spa has a sauna, steam room, ice fountain and thermal suite, plus there's an indoor pool and a hydro pool that goes outside.

There are 23 bedrooms finished in a country-house style. Most are in the main house but there are six in a modern annexe. Expect free Wi-Fi, a DVD player, a complimentary baby listening service, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Larger groups should upgrade to the Gladstone Suite, which has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus views over the Teme Valley. Some rooms are dog friendly but prior arrangement is needed.

On Sunday mornings, there's a breakfast club where little ones are looked after by nursery staff to give parents a much-needed lie in. Later on, the Garden Café serves a relaxed menu all day, including a high tea for children each afternoon. Little ones are also welcome in the Library Bar, which is cosy with an open fire and dark wood. The Brookes restaurant is adult only in the evenings, but has an early sitting for children.

Other Comments: A bit of a curate's egg; some things excellent (especially provision for children) some things only OK.

Enjoyed Most: The food was excellent.

Enjoyed Most: Staff were very helpful under difficult circumstances.
Other Comments: Food was very disappointing and the hotel itself is tired. especially the carpets to the rooms as extensivly stained. The gardens were overgrown and unkempt, nothing like the photo on their website. We understand this is a family friendly hotel, but to have children in the pool naked without bathing costumes leads to a health risk.

Enjoyed Most: The food was lovely and the staff were an brilliant.
Other Comments: It was a lovely hotel but very much designed for families. The travelzoo deal was not very clear about this. For families it is excellent but couples there is a little lack of atmosphere.

Enjoyed Most: yes - everything else was spot on - but there's no getting away from not sleeping!
Other Comments: Unfortunately after coming away for a one night break there was a problem with a noisy radiator that kept us awake much of the night. Having suggested on leaving and afterwards by telephone that this was not acceptable the Hotel have not been in contact with us.

Enjoyed Most: The grounds are beautiful.

Enjoyed Most: The dinner was enjoyable but perhaps was smaller than anticipated.
Other Comments: Having stayed previously and had a 1st class experience it was disappointing that the hotel had changed to cater for families. The informality of dress for the staff lowers the tone of the hotel, this may be fine in the Spa and Children's area but is not what you expect in the hotel and in particular within the dining room. The bedroom was previously a single and only had one chair in it
