Known as “the Gateway to the Cotswolds”, the town of Burford was once included in Forbes’ list of Europe’s most idyllic places to live. Celebrities including Kate Moss and Kate Winslet have lived in the area and it’s only a 40-minute drive from the bright lights of Oxford and Cheltenham. The 4-star Highway Inn is right on Burford’s pretty high street, with the rolling green of the Oxfordshire hills visible in the distance.

The building dates back to 1480 and there are still plenty of original features spread throughout. The chocolate-box façade is complimented by low beams, creaking floorboards, antique furniture, and nooks and crannies to explore. The inn itself is popular with locals and walkers, and there’s a welcoming atmosphere, local beer and a roaring log fire in winter. The food (best described as ‘posh pub grub’) is made to order and also locally sourced wherever possible. Expect dishes such as pan-seared breast of wood pigeon, rack of lamb with garlic mash and redcurrant jus, and the Highway’s ‘proper’ fish pie. The wine cellar is also open from November-February on a Friday and Saturday evening.

There are 10 rooms on site, all named after nearby villages and all of various shapes and sizes, but brimming with character. Wi-Fi is free and there is a small decanter of sherry provided on arrival. The Burford Four-Poster room is the most popular, with more space to play with and a king-size four-poster bed. A number of the rooms are dog friendly, baby monitors are available on request, and while some rooms overlook the high street, street noise is not an issue.

The town is a pleasant place to meander through, exploring the independent boutiques, cafés and antique shops as you go. The Tolsey Museum is free to visit and is open on Tuesday-Sunday afternoons, plus there’s the Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens, which is just five minutes by car. Further afield, Batsford Arboretum, Blenheim Palace and the National Trust’s Chastleton House are all within a 30-minute drive.

This is an ancient building with steep and narrow staircases. Our room, at the top of the house was cosy with an up-dated bathroom. Although at the front, over looking the high street, it was remarkably quiet at night and we were not disturbed by traffic noise. The food was great - especially the breakfasts!

It's location was wonderful to visit the Cotswolds. Burford is a drinkers paradise with 11 pubs and hotels, many with live music.

No extras were made for vegetarian breakfast just meat removed. It's a shame as I'd pre-requested it. I'll know now to look for places that advertise vegi breakfasts.

The evening meals
Other Comments
I know we booked a small double but it was tiny! Difficulty getting around the bed. Had to make tea on the floor as no room on table and lead didn't reach socket. Television had no BBC channels. Light didn't work in bathroom. As we are used to camping we just worked around these issues and anyway we were out most of the time. Also, the dining room was cold in the morning and the cooked breakfast was lukewarm. On the plus side the evening meals were excellent as was Raz the barman, waiter, porter, booking in clerk who worked his socks off and was attentive and cheerful despite being rushed off his feet.
