The mural greeting guests at the Hotel Triton is an allegory for the creative spirit in modern San Francisco: a pop-bohemian-botanical fantasy from an artist with a high-wattage connection -- in this instance the daughter-in-law of star architect I.M. Pei. It’s a little kooky, a little absurd, and a little glamorous all at once. Those emotions carry through the whole building, where rooms have cheeky injections of unexpected patterns, neon framed art, and furnishings upholstered in seemingly contradictory prints.

All the character in the world wouldn’t matter if the beds weren’t comfortable, and guests luck out here, with Frette linens tucked in around pillow-top mattresses. Basic Wi-Fi is complimentary for all hotel guests. Gather round the metallic gold leather seating and fireplace in the lobby for a nightly wine hour from 5-6pm., as well as tarot card and astrology readings.

The temple gates directly across the street don’t just mark the start of Chinatown, but also lead toward several other historic downtown neighborhoods. The roads slope up toward Telegraph Hill, where the Art Deco Coit Tower looks like a concrete fire hose escaping from the hill beneath, and views from the summit fan out across the skyline. One way to head back downhill is over suspended walkways that slowly wind down past off-the-grid-looking cottages and dense flower gardens that are home to a wayward flock of parrots.

From the press:
  • “Created by nine artists, this colourful hotel, across from the ornate Chinatown gate, succeeds in being both fun and funky” -- Time Out
  • “A great fit for those traveling alone or with a partner, whether on business or for that romantic weekend. And while the rooms (aside from the suites) won’t easily accommodate more than 2 people, the hotel has the perfect fun vibe for a girls’ or guys’ weekend getaway” -- Examiner

Enjoyed Most: Perfect location -- close to office, dining and attractions
Other Comments: For a Kimpton property in SF, this place is somewhat standard. It could use a refresh but it's a great option if you don't plan to spend a lot of time in the room. I did like the passages from Kerouac's On the Road used as decoration throughout the room. Good local touch, although one that appeals to literary nerds only.

Other Comments: First, there was some complication with them finding my reservation, they interrogated me, asked me personal questions, then charged me an extra $100 insurance deposit! The room was tiny, there was no fridge, the room looked nothing like the pictures, the wallpaper was peeling off and draping from the walls, they let an emergency alarm continue ringing for more than an hour in the middle of the night, and even when we fell asleep after it stopped, someone was sent to our door to knock and wake us up to ask "Did you call the front desk about the alarm? We took care of it"....... Wow.....

Enjoyed Most: The hotel is located at the edge of the Financial district and Chinatown, so it is super-convenient if either is your destination. Front desk staff was casual and very accommodating with special requests. While the hotel's "bohemian" description may be a euphemism for a little old and a bit musty, my room was very well-lit (important to me) and the rate was a very good value for San Francisco.
Other Comments: The in-window AC unit ran a bit loud, for me.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel had a really fun vibe. As soon as we arrived, we were offered a cominentry glass of wine and decided to stay and hang out in the lobby for another. The employees were really friendly and welcoming.
Other Comments: The room and bed were rather small but not uncommon for a boutique hotel. The location is incredible and the style, cleanliness and service were excellent.
