The Lugger Hotel is a "delightful" inn (The AA) on the harbour front in Portloe, a quaint fishing village on the Cornish coast, half an hour's drive from Truro. Once a 17th-century smuggler's inn, the property has been reinvented as a boutique hotel and was named one of The Mirror’s Top 10 Seaside Hotels in 2015.

Ringed by craggy cliffs, Portloe is a "wild and romantic spot" (The Stylist) with narrow streets and a picturesque little harbour. It is in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula, "arguably the most tranquil corner of one of Britain's most beautiful counties", says The Guardian, with "statuesque cliffs and untrammelled beaches". The South West Coast Path passes right through the village (guests can borrow wellies and umbrellas from the hotel), and it is a pleasant two and a half hours' walk around Nare Head to Carne Beach's sheltered south-facing sands. A 20-minute drive inland leads to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, a "fascinating" Victorian garden (The Rough Guide to Britain) that was forgotten for 76 years and only rediscovered in 1990.

The hotel's restaurant holds two AA Rosettes, as well as Breakfast and Dinner awards, and serves seasonal fresh food, with an emphasis on Cornish lobster, crab and shellfish. The views over the harbour are excellent, especially from the terrace. There's no mobile phone signal at the hotel, but free Wi-Fi is available in the lounge, where there's an open fireplace and comfy sofas.

Rooms are cosy and have a "chic seaside feel", says The Stylist. Classic rooms have views of the village or the cliffs, or you can upgrade to a Deluxe room for a glimpse of the sea or a terrace overlooking the village. There's fresh milk in the fridge for tea and coffee, and guests are treated to a nightly turndown service, including biscuits, hot chocolate, the next day's weather forecast and a short story.

Simply the best! Love the lugger and it's staff. This was my fourth visit and each time has been exceptional. If anything, the room upgrade made this the best visit yet. There will definitely be another visit in the future.

The food was excellent. We really enjoyed both our meals. The cream tea was to die for. The little extras ment a lot .... Fruit/water/biscuits and tea tray in the room. The evening drinking chocolate and the leaving bag of water and sweets. The room was lovely and clean. The main staff wer delightful very friendly.

A cushion was on the bed minus its cover and was badly stained. Too many lights in the room.... 5 side lights and 3 lamps. 2 lots of lights in the bathroom. All lamps in bedroom and bathroom wer on when entering the room. Felt this was wasteful. It was difficult to sleep as it was like daylight as othe lights from the carpark right outside the one window and the outside wall lights at the other window and the gaps around the door let the light in from the corridor lights that wer on all night. Again we felt this was wasteful. The other thing was the lack of soundproofing between rooms. Could hear very clearly ALL noise from next doors bathroom.(not nice) We wer also woken up twice during the night by the snoring from below. We felt the waiting staff at the evening meal wer slow to serve choosing to spend a lot of time talking about themselves to other guests.... We had to ask each time we wanted a drink. My husband also found a piece of hard clear plastic in his desert.
