Located on King Street, the former centre of the North's banking industry, the 5-star Hotel Gotham opened in April 2015, 80 years after it first opened as a bank. Known to be one of Manchester's most chic destinations, King Street has a variety of restaurants, bars and designer stores.

The hotel is listed in The Time's 2014 Cool Hotel Guide, which describes it as a "bank robber's dream" with a "decadent, bling style". The property has an upside-down feel: the reception is on the sixth floor and rooms are on the first five floors. Receptionists in sharp pinstripes welcome guests with complimentary mini cocktails.

The Hotel Gotham has "seriously luxurious and nostalgic interiors, according to the Manchester Evening News, and reflects the Neoclassical style of the Grade II-listed building. Condé Nast Traveler praises the "tongue-in-cheek banking décor" – all rooms have moneybag-style laundry bags, gold bars are used as bookends and toiletry holders, and there are bat-shaped Do Not Disturb signs that pay homage to the fictional Gotham.

There's plenty to do in the area, which has a "rich history and culture, easily explored in its myriad museums and galleries", according to Lonely Planet. Further afield, the Salford architect Daniel Libeskind, is a 10-minute walk from the Harbour City Metro stop. The Lowry, with its multiple performance spaces, bars, restaurants and shops, is also a short walk from the Harbour City stop.

The restaurant, Honey, has typewriters on the wall and waiting staff are dressed as pinstripe-clad bank managers. The menu features a modern twist on brasserie classics and local dishes. The 7th-floor private members bar, which has three outdoor terraces, is accessed via an illuminated steel and brass staircase inspired by old bank vaults.

Each of the individually designed bedrooms in the hotel are "dark and decadent with grey walls, large comfy beds, leather bed heads and faux fur throws", according to The Daily Telegraph. Rooms range from club, executive and suites, and there are five Inner Sanctum suites. With no windows, these suites instead feature a huge wonder wall with a projection of the city skyline. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Enjoyed Most: everything
Other Comments: our cocktail maker in the room was the best bit and breakfast in bed what we paid extra for was the best part.

Enjoyed Most: The staff were very professional
Other Comments: We were very disappointed with Bar Brass. There was an event in and it ruined the bar. It was my 50th birthday and so we planned a few drinks in the bar but it was crowded, very noisy and full of drunk people. Not what we expected at all and ruined our experience of the hotel.

Enjoyed Most: Bedrooms
Other Comments: Not given the chocolates or any offer of late check out etc as stated by travel zoo

Enjoyed Most: Very quick and easy check in.
Other Comments: Room did not feel very clean (carpet did not look hooverd and hair in shower, stain on carpet - not what you would expect from such an expensive hotel). It was my boyfriends birthday and this was added to the "special requestes section, no effort was made by the hotel or staff, not even a happy birthday was said - all other places we visited over the weekend were much better with this.

Enjoyed Most: The luxury of the room, the décor, the breakfast, plus all the staff were friendly and accommodating. The attention to detail was most refreshing the guys in club brass were very knowledgeable and the cocktails absolutely delicious.
Other Comments: It's truly an oasis of opulence in Manchester we will certainly return only wish we could afford to stay in one of the suites. It was a five star experience.

Enjoyed Most: Bar and stylish room.
Other Comments: No mention of travel zoo extras, no late departure or early check in also no mention of room upgrade. basically got plate of chocolate for using travel zoo.

Enjoyed Most: They cleared our bar bill because of the above.
Other Comments: On arrival the doorman was very jolly and pleasant but one of the 2 women present practically shooed me away when I began enquiring about the exclusive extras. Of those extras, only the early check in time was granted. Hardly difficult in a hotel that was almost empty. I wasn't granted the room upgrade despite our room not matching the photographs on their website, which gave the appearance of a much bigger room. The layout made the room feel small. Much smaller than I expected for £200. They forgot the chocolates despite my reminding them twice by email prior to our arrival. Then they placed a plate of candies in the room. There was only one chocolate. It certainly wasn't a luxury box. I have a photograph if you wish to see them. The room temperature couldn't be controlled within the room. When reception couldn't alter it from the main desk, at 1am when it was too cold for comfort, they sent a portable electric heater. I have a photo of that too. All highly embarrassing.
