"Location was great - close to Bart, shopping, lots of restaurants, short walk to Chinatown. Staff were all very helpful, food in the lobby bar was very good - it's from the Scala restaurant but the bar is more laid back."

Two -- some would say three -- San Francisco icons are at the doorstep of the Sir Francis Drake hotel. The first is Union Square, “one of [the city’s] main retail and cultural centers” (SFGate.com) with department stores, major fashion houses and glitzy restaurants. The second is the Powell Street cable car, which runs right in front of the hotel on its journey down to Market Street or up to posh Nob Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf beyond.

The third icon is the hotel’s own doormen, nicknamed Beefeaters, who dress in red-and-gold-fringed regalia taken from the hotel’s English roots from the 1920s. The lobby soars in marble and wood paneling up to barrel-vaulted ceilings dripping in chandeliers. Farther up on the 21st floor is the Starlight Room, wrapped in windows with a 180-degree panorama of the bay, hosting nightclub acts and Sunday brunch drag shows. The Starlight Room is closed on Sunday and Monday evenings.

The rooms are rich with oversized jacquard prints, bold injections of color, sleek black lacquered furniture and oblique reframes of royal portraits. All hotel guests get free morning coffee and tea and admission to the wine hour in the lobby from 5-6 p.m. with complimentary pours.

Reservations are recommended at the on-site Scala's Bistro. The bustling tourist magnet also draws in local crowds for its Old World ambiance and rustic Italian and French eats.

Room wasn't ready for 3 hours after our 3pm arrival, but the manager gave us coupons towards meals and drinks to make up for our wait. Nice staff!

The view from the Starlight Room was nice, but I do not think we will return to stay at this hotel in the future.

We have visited Kimpton SFD quite a few times, and greatly enjoyed our time there. This visit was a stark contrast. The front desk staff was generally ill informed and unfriendly. The rooms felt a bit shabby. We booked specifically through the Travel Zoo deal for the cocktail amenity, but the bar was closed while we were there. Upon check in, the desk staff person stated she "did not know the bar hours" (the bar is approximately 20 feet from the desk) and that "there should be a sign". We checked the sign, however the bar never actually opened for the day, despite stating a 4:00 p.m. opening. While there, we noted prices for the same dates on Hotels Tonight for $60 less per night than we paid.

We were put into a room overlooking a union strike. They had bullhorns blaring and drums pounding from 7:20 Am till 10PM. They couldn't have put us in a worse location to hear the racket.

The ambience and atmosphere. It was beautiful, historic, and cool to just be in there. Great location too!

Every evening (5pm - 6 pm) there is a wine social in the atrium opposite the lobby. It's a complimentary bar of wine and made for nice conversation during the early evening.
