The Neo-Gothic Ettington Park Hotel is a "romantic" and "quintessentially English" manor-house hotel (Red magazine), set in 40 acres of grounds in the picturesque Stour Valley. It holds four stars and has AA Inspectors' Choice status. The Grade I-listed property is brimming with history -- the estate is mentioned in the Domesday Book and there are ruins of a 12th-century church in the grounds. The exterior also featured in the 1963 film "The Haunting".

It is a 15-minute drive from Stratford-upon-Avon, where you can visit the birthplace of Shakespeare or see a play by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Warwick Castle, built by William the Conqueror, is 25 minutes' drive away and discounted tickets are available from the hotel. The hotel is also 20 minutes from the start of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile footpath, and half an hour's drive from Farnborough Hall, an 18th-century mansion that is managed by the National Trust.

The hotel's panelled Oak Room restaurant holds two AA Rosettes and its modern British food is "extremely good", says Fodor's. Guests can order elevenses and afternoon tea in the Grand Drawing Room, which has an ornate plaster ceiling. The hotel also has an indoor pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and steam rooms.

Classic Rooms are contemporary in style. Executive Rooms are larger, and some are in the main manor and have period features. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and the in-room mini fridges are stocked with fresh milk.

From the press:

  • "There's history here in spades" -- The Guardian

  • "A soothing retreat for theatregoers who don't want to cope with Stratford's crowds" -- Fodor's

Enjoyed Most: The leisure facilities and the well thought out on-suite bedroom, which was lovely and large also the wonderful grounds which surround this building.
Other Comments: Disappointed with the set table d 'hote meal. Unfortunately this was not up to a standard we would expect for a hotel of this standing.

JOHN Oct 17, 2015 SOUTHSEA, United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: The hotel building itself is beautiful, the staff very nice and welcoming and the room pleasant apart from the outlook.
Other Comments: Road signs to the hotel were not good (not helped by bad local authority signs and recent changes to roads. I had at very least 60 miles added to my journey. Food was over priced and the choices were not good - I struggled as did my friends. Reluctantly we picked a starter to expand out time together, the main was alright but there was nothing on the dessert menu that appealed (the man in our party did have a dessert to fill a space). I object paying extra to have cheese and biscuits if a dessert is not appeal. The final insult was that the '£15 off if you dine at the hotel offer' apparently did not apply as two of us only had 2 courses. (Who's fault was that? My potato was uncooked but I chose not to mention it in front of friends. As I paid extra for sole use it did not please me to find I had a room looking out at a long flat roof and no view.
