Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel is a Cumbrian hideaway praised by The Daily Telegraph for its "old-fashioned charm", "delicious" food and "blissfully comfortable" beds. The country manor is set in landscaped gardens on the site of a 13th-century convent on the Pennine Way.

This Georgian country house has the River Nent running through the garden and is just under three miles from the village of Alston, and a 40-minute drive from Hadrian's Wall. Located on the edge of the Lake District and 22 miles south of Northumberland National Park, the hotel is a great base for walkers with local rambling routes accessible by foot.

The hotel boasts 2 AA Rosettes for food, serving up British cuisine with a continental twist, made from high-quality local ingredients. There is also an award-winning menu of over 100 wines for guests to choose from -- awarded Imbibe Magazine Wine List of the Year 2014 and AA Noteable Wine List 2015. The food keeps up the high standards in the morning, with the Cumbrian breakfast holding a VisitBritain Breakfast Award.

The cosy library and lounge with log fires give a low-key, country-house feel, or you can indulge in an aperitif in the hotel’s cocktail bar. Long windows in all rooms allow guests to enjoy the views from inside, or you can open up the French windows to the lawn on sunny days.

The Guardian praises the “bright bedrooms with window seats, maybe a sofa, good furniture and Scrabble; most have gorgeous views”. The AA concurs, noting “accommodation is provided in stylish, thoughtfully equipped bedrooms”.

Enjoyed Most: The food and staff were great.
Other Comments: Other reviews mention that the Hotel building is tired. It is, but it would be tragic if the hotel failed. I would make every effort to return in order that some hope can be given that the hotel can survive the current downturn and return to its former glory as a leading hotel in the North West of England

Enjoyed Most: My wife and I enjoyed the food most of all, the quality ingredients were skillfully fashioned into dishes that were a pleasure to the eye and an even greater joy to the palate.
Other Comments: Whilst staying at Lovelady Shield we heard that it was on the market to be sold, we would hope very much that any change of ownership would not affect the kitchen team. However the fabric and decor of the property would benefit from an injection of investment.
