Built in 1885, Woodlands Park Hotel is a "magnificent pile" (The AA), surrounded by well-groomed lawns and 10 acres of parkland in the Surrey countryside. The Victorian manor house was built by the Bryant family, who owned the matchmaking firm Bryant & May, and often hosted the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VII).

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Cobham and Leatherhead. Nearby attractions include Denbies Wine Estate, Hampton Court Palace -- "England's largest and grandest Tudor structure" (Lonely Planet) -- and Painshill, where you'll find 158 acres of landscaped gardens scattered with 18th-century follies and a crystal grotto. Junction 9 of the M25 is less than five miles away, and central London is around an hour’s drive from the hotel.

The Oak Room, the hotel's main restaurant, has traditional oak-panelled walls and holds two AA Rosettes. Main courses, such as monkfish with puy lentils and tomato ragout, are inspired by classical dishes and "make an impact", says The AA. There's also a bistro-style restaurant for steaks, burgers and pasta dishes. Guests can borrow a "gym in a bag", which has an exercise mat, resistance tubes and a toning ball, or make use of the "yoga in a bag" kit, with a yoga mat, blocks and a DVD (Ashtanga or Hatha).

Executive Rooms are contemporary in style and are larger than the standard Classic Rooms. All guests get free Wi-Fi and bottled mineral water.

Enjoyed Most: Food was good. If you like old fashioned hotels it was fine.
Other Comments: They really tried to be a better hotel than they actually were. Service was very inconsistent.

Enjoyed Most: The friendly, polite greeting from all members of staff who seemed to enjoy their work.

Enjoyed Most: Beds were very comfortable. Member of staff in the brasserie restaurant who helped us.
Other Comments: Lack of management. No information was given to us on check in on how our offer worked. We were not given our pre dinner champagne and canopies as this was not explained to us. We were left seated in the restaurant, after sometime we got up a left the restaurant to find a member of staff from the brasserie restaurant who was very good and helped us. Layout of the bar/reception/lounge area. No facilities. Absolutely nothing to do. Nothing but a functions/weddings/ conference centre. We were on a 2 day break but checked out the next morning.

Enjoyed Most: The location is good. The building is impressive on the outside. The atmosphere is good in some parts of the hotel. Some of the waiting staff were good.
Other Comments: The reception staff although efficient were unwelcoming, perhaps they thought we were an inconvenience? On the evening of day one the shower in the room broke, and although it was fixed while we were out the next day, there was no offer of another room, or even an apology from the receptionist or duty manager. If I were a duty manager the first thing I would do is offer the guests another room. We had to have the water to the room turned off for the night and could not brush our teeth or flush the toilet that evening. The next day we were given another room to bathe in before leaving for the day. The standard of cleaning in the communal areas was very poor. The carpet on the main staircase looked like it had not been vacuumed in weeks. One of the breakfast room staff was not able advise me which tea was the stronger; Assam or Darjeeling - he said they were both the same! Staff uniforms were often dirty. Too many visible tattoos on staff member's hands and necks.

Enjoyed Most: Food was incredible
Other Comments: Staff and food were excellent, lovely hotel. However rooms could be cleaner, in particular the bathroom as there was a line of dust/dirt everywhere.

Enjoyed Most: Location and overall experience
Tracey Aug 29, 2015 Dunstable, United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: Evening meal was very good, although selection was limited.
Other Comments: We had an executive bedroom but the furniture and decor dated back to the 1960s. The mahogany wardrobe was something I used to sell in my shop fifty years ago. The chest of drawers was only fit for the tip. Walls were plain white with no pictures. Could have been an executive room fifty years ago.
